So I recently bought and assembled my Framework 13 DIY Intel Ultra Series 1.
I decided not to have it pre-installed with windows because I could actually save money by buying a physical installation from best buy instead (I bought windows 11 home). This physical installation I bought came with both an installation media in the form of a usb, and a card with a product key.
When I inserted the usb, the laptop recognized it and everything went smoothly. However, at some point during the installation process the system sent a message saying “Installation Failed”. I shut down the laptop, but now when I boot back to BIOS the laptop no longer recognizes my usb as an installation media
To make matters worse, I’ve noticed that my 13 has been running quite hot, even just idling in BIOS, and I can’t tell if the fan is even running.
My worst fear is that my installation media has been corrupted due to some kind of overheating issue from the CPU. If anyone has any suggestions, I would gladly take them.
I cannot assist with your specific and well-described problem. I just wanted to help dial your anxiety down. It seems unlikely that your installation media has suffered heat damage.
I’d guess that the auto-boot-from-USB functionality was disabled in software before the installation failed.
Since your FW13 is new and Windows 11 is a supported OS, I recommend you open a support ticket (by following the Support process). This is a user-to-user help and discussion forum. You’ll only get the attention of the Framework support team in here if you’re lucky.
I own a FW13 Core Ulta Series 1 and can confirm that those chips do run hot and is designed to also run hot.
Inside the BIOS fans do run a bit low, but nothing inside would break for any heat related reasons. Your system will force shutdown itself if it was critical, so don’t worry about that.
Regarding your issue right now.
Your BIOS settings are probably set to “Secure boot on” and boot priority order is most likely changed due to mid Windows installation issues.
I would disable the Secure boot, and you will probably see your USB media again.
I would also recommend you create a new Windows ISO Media on another computer if you can.
You can override and use the USB provided with your Windows license.
Why I suggest this is because the Windows installation in your Windows license USB could be really old and a new official fresh one probably works better.
