Working Fingerprint Reader

Shoutout to @lbkNhubert for pointing me in the right direction: Workaround for missing biometrics - #9 by lbkNhubert

I bought a handful of fingerprint readers from Amazon to try and find a working one:

This is the correct one, the Color: B model (Amazon.com : USB-C Fingerprint Reader Biometric Scanner Hello Plug and Play USB Type-C Fingerprint ID Device Compatible 11 10 PC Laptop Fast Secure Login Authentication : Electronics) with the Chipsailing CS9711 fingerprint reader (lsusb listed as 2541:0236).

Thanks for the legwork, great to hear that you have it working, apologies that I didn’t have a link to share. I deserve no credit, I am merely standing on the shoulders of others and enjoying the heck out of their efforts. I just unlocked the 12" with a fingerprint - that brings me more joy than seems reasonable. Nonetheless, it does.

Thanks for the detailed info above, and have a great day!

I had already given up and resigned to the fact that there are no external working fingerprint readers that work out of the box with libfprint in Linux, you proved me wrong so you get some credit <3.

Sadly, that fork looks a little dusty. The chance of it getting merged is probably pretty low.

Someday our prints will come.

Would you mind measuring the device that you have - height, width, total depth, and depth to the base of the usb-c plug?

On the usb-a version that I have, those dimensions are:

18x11x20|8

The case looks like it adds 1mm on each side, but with this one working I am not willing to tear it apart. So theoretically it might be 16x9x20|8

I went ahead and ordered the usb-c reader that you noted, as well as a few usb-a ones and some a to c adapters, with the thought that I might try to gut one to see if it could be fit into a 3d printed expansion card. It might stick out the bottom a little bit, but I could put up with that, what I want to figure out is if I can get it flush. I don’t have the chops to design or have fabricated a custom pcb into which to plug the reader, but others might.

This USB-A one works and is still on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DNTGB3BV

Removed the outside cover and it fits ok. I will need to look for a usb-a to usb-c adapter that is 1-2 mm longer.
