7640 usb port failure?

I have a 7640 based 13" running Fedora 42, and I’ve been loving it. Recently I’ve found one of my ports is not working (port 4). I typically have a USBA adaptor in there, and I plugged in a usb stick for some file transfers and it never auto-mounted. I tried swapping the expension card from port 4 to port 3 and it auto-mounted just fine, so that solved the immediate need for transferring files. I stuck the USBC expansion card in port 4 and then plugged in my USB charger and the laptop would not charge. So that leads me to believe it’s not the expansion card, it’s the actual port on the motherboard. Anything else I should try? Are there some diagnostics or anything else I can do that might help? Would this be a warranty issue? (this was preordered June 30th 2024, received end of August/early September)

You could try plugging in something directly into the mainboard port without a USB-C card present. You could also disassemble the laptop to take a look at the mainboard if something near that port looks burned.

But it looks like you still have warranty, so I’d message support and let them walk through the troubleshooting steps.

You could also try a full mainboard reset:

Step 1: Turn off laptop and remove charging cable
Step 2: Remove Input Cover and replug charging cable
Step 3: Press the case switch 10 times (it’s located near the fan). Press it for 2 seconds, release, then wait for the mainboard lights to blink red. Repeat until it has been done 10 times.
Step 4: Reconnect Input Cover and turn on the laptop.

Thanks for the suggestions! I opened it up, didn’t see any scorching. I looked for the mainboard reset button, but I couldn’t find it, and I didn’t find anything in the docs pointing it out. So I put it back together figuring I’d just contact Support, but to my surprise, the port started working again both charging and data transfer. shrug All’s well that ends well, I suppose!
