Can not install security cam software on this laptop but others are fine

I have the new Ultra Core 1 laptop 13. I am running Windows 11. I have Axis cameras that require a Windows machine. Other PCs are able to install the software which is available for both Windows 10 and 11. When i try to install it on this laptop, I get an error every time. I click on the exe that is downloaded and I Can’t even get to the installer before it crashes.

I know this is a very specific issue, but has anyone else ever used Axis cameras and tried installing Axis Companion on their laptop? Any issues?

Is the installer crashing or is the computer crashing? Try to check for any log files.

Dang, that is the software I am referring to. I see it finally did work for you. For me, I would get a windows pop up essentially saying something has gone wrong and it gives me the option to close or look at logs. I try to click on the logs, but it does nothing.

What’s also interesting is that I don’t even get that popup that you get saying “This app can’t run on your pc”.

Thank you for trying this by the way!

May I ask what version of .net framework you have? That may be part of my issue.

My apologies. the installer is crashing.

Hi @John_Blaine,

Welcome to the forum! It appears that the Axis Companion software is a Microsoft .NET application. Now depending on how old it was written (and some of the components that are tied into the application) it may require an OLDER .NET environment that is NOT installed by default on the latest Windows 11 installations.

I looked at the Axis website and it mentions nothing in the system requirements as to what version of .NET it needs to install. Nor does their support page about the Axis Companion software. Alternatively, you could install the older .NET frameworks on your computer to see if it suddenly begins installing. Sadly, most of the .NET software does not bother to bring up a dialog box that states what it is missing and why it failed to install/start.

It is doubtful that this is isolated to just Framework computers. The latest Windows 11 installations are not coming with a lot of old legacy components pre-installed (the ones that have been depreciated for years). A good example of that is the latest driver package from Framework still makes calls for Windows WMIC which no longer comes preinstalled in the latest Windows 11 installations. There have been a few posts here on the forum that people can not install the latest driver pack from Framework on a new machine/fresh Windows 11 installation because the WMIC component is not there. You may need to reach out to Axis or search a little further online to find out what .NET component it is catching up on and not running. Axis makes good cameras and their software is usually decent; though like most security system software it uses a lot of legacy code.

Let us know what you find out.

I truly appreciate the response. I looked at the release notes for Axis Companion and found the following, especially regarding .NET:

Products involved: AXIS Companion

Release date: September 20, 2024

Software version: 4.3.99

File name: AXISCompanionSetup.exe

Supported OS: Windows 11, Windows 10 (64-bit only)

.NET Framework 4.8

It seems to require 4.8 and if my regedit is showing me what I need to know, it seems I am on 4.3 I believe. I did have to reset Windows since receiving the laptop in an attempt to troubleshoot this issue. I haven’t re-installed the Framework driver package just yet though.

Just saw that same Release Notes text file.

Oops; looks like v4.8 is somewhat old. Says it was released in 2019! :scream: There is a v4.8.1 which is slightly newer, though I am unsure if it is backwards compatible.

If it is not installed you can download the web installer here:

You may need to restart your machine after installing the v4.8 .NET framework.

wow. 2019!! sheesh. Seems weird it installed for @anon81945988 with that older version and not for me.
