Can't charge unless the laptop is off

I’m using my existing charger since I didn’t order the GPU, but it won’t charge unless I first turn off the computer, see the light go on and turn it back on. When it’s plugged in running Linux it doesn’t begin to charge, I hear the “plug in” and “plug out” sounds at the same time.

FW16 has some problems with some chargers.
What is the make/model of the charger?
Also, what BIOS version on the FW16 ?
Which slot are you plugging the charger into?

I’m using one of the back slots with a USB-C cord (the one labeled #1). Currently using the Steam Deck charger since I don’t need that much power. It clearly works, it just doesn’t work when I’m already booted into the OS.

That charger is underpowered, you’ll need at least 60W to charge and use at the same time.

I have a FW16 without the dGPU.
I have seen it draw 180W when charging the battery while switched on, but most of the time it draws 100W when charging the battery while switched on.
When battery is full, it drops to about 22W most of the time.

doesn’t matter, the little light is not on if I plug it in while it’s running so I discharge quicker

As said you will need 60w usb-power delivery capable charger to atleast somewhat charge the device when its on

I’ve a 30W charger, which absolutely works, and charges under very light loads.

that’s not true, when I plug in the charger before turning on the computer it works to charge it because it only idles at like 15w

I have same issue with FW16 on Windows. I have 140W charger and it shows values in real time. When screen is on, it mostly takes 0W and briefly jumps at 26W and back to zero. When I close the lid, it goes immediately to 80W. My charger is: “Mobile Origin 140W GaN Display Charger PW21 - 2x USB-C + USB-A” Is there any solution or do I need to get different charger? I quite like this one.

I just updated BIOS. 67W charger charges at 67W, 37W charges at 37W. They both work with open lid. But that one still charges 80W only with closed lid. Otherwise it has 0W… ramps up watts to 18-30W and then drops to the zero and tries again after several seconds. Unless there is some hidden trick, I am afraid I have to return the charger.

Which one? Can you use $ sudo ectool charge state show and read the charger input current for both the good and the bad ones?

Can I? I am on Windows. It says “command now found”

So I just ran into this issue today. I’m on a flight back home and my anker power bank tells me it stops charging once the laptop is on. I’ve used this power bank several times before with no issue. The weird thing is Windows would say it was charging and the LED on the side would lite up orange, but the power bank would say 0W.

And it decided to start working now that I’m writing this. :man_facepalming: I don’t know why this restart worked and the others didn’t.

One thing I noticed though before the charging issue was that AMD’s Adrenaline software wasn’t running or was “missing”. That is a different issue that I usually fix with a reboot.

I also had two Bluetooth devices connected at the time I noticed (earbuds and a controller).

I’ve been experiencing this issue for a while - I’ve just opened a GitHub issue about it
