Cooler Master 11th gen mainboard not working with Dell docking station anymore

  • Which OS (Operating System)? Linux or N/A
  • Which release of your OS (Operating System / Windows 10, 11, Distribution of Linux)? Ubuntu 22.04
  • Which Framework laptop (11th, 12th or 13th generation Framework laptop) are you asking for support with? 11th gen Intel

I recently purchsed an AMD upgrade board to replace my 11th gen original mainboard. I moved the old mainboard with the same ssd, wifi, ram to the new Cooler Master case. Previous to this, I was able to use the laptop in my media room hooked up to a Dell D6000 usb-c dock that provided hdmi, wired ethernet, power, and usb keyboard/mouse using a single usb-c connection. After moving the parts to the Cooler Master case, it will not post or display using the docking station or port replicator (insert flame war here lol). It will only power up using the original charger and an hdmi cable connected directly to the mainboard. Why is this the case (pun not intended) when it worked fine when it was in the original laptop chassis. Is there a replacement usb-c dock that anyone can recommend that will give me display, ethernet, usb?

Ok I managed to work this out. After much experimentation, I have it plugged into the Dell D6000 dock with a single usb-c connection, no other expansion cards required. Part of the problem with all of the different testing scenarios (I tried a smaller travel dock as well, that also eventually worked) is that I was not giving the system time between power cable changes or shutdowns. You must allow all power to drain before plugging in whatever power source you’re using (charger, docking station, etc.). In the server world we used to call this “flea” power. Holding down the power button for 30 seconds with no cables plugged in can speed that process up, otherwise wait 2 minutes between switching power sources. I now have power, hdmi, ethernet, and usb keyboard working off a single connection to the mainboard!

For full disclosure, the only usb-c expansion card is inserted in the upper left port (when facing the front of the mainboard).
