Crash During Windows 10 Installation

When I initially installed Windows 10 after assembling my laptop, I had two unexpected crashes. The first happened immediately after the Cortana intro messages and the second happened as I was setting privacy settings for the account I made.

After the first crash, I noticed the charge status LED did some green and red flashes before returning to amber and booting. I didn’t notice this after the second crash. Both times, the laptop behaved like it suddenly lost power.
I plugged my laptop in with the Framework USB-C PD charger immediately following assembly and started Windows installation less than five minutes later while the battery was still charging.

Everything is working fine now and the only real inconvenience was that I had to make two users and later delete one because of the crash during account creation. I also spent a couple hours installing software, adjusting settings, and just playing around and saw no issues.

Any ideas what may have caused this? Figured I’d share here in case it helps anyone in the future.

This was an i7-1165G7 DIY model from late batch 2 if that helps narrow causes down.

Thanks for reporting this. Could you share what memory and storage parts you’re using and what thumb drive for the Windows installer?

Of course. Here are the parts I’m using:

  • Storage: Western Digital SN750 500GB
  • Memory: 2x Crucial CT16G4SFRA32A (32GB total)
  • USB installation drive: SanDisk SDCZ48-032G (32G with Windows 10 21H1 installation image and Framework driver package only)

Definitely nothing out of the ordinary there. Let us know if you see any further issues when using the laptop.

Exactly the same experience with the unit I just received today.

  • i5-1135G7
  • 2x CT16G4SFD832A
  • WD SN750

The memory passed a single pass of Memtest.
I read the whole SSD with badblocks and it turned out nothing. I was installing on battery. Will try on power now.
