OS: Windows 11
Model: Framework 13 AMD DIY
I have a Framework 13 that I bought last year. Things have mostly been ok except for some occasional issues with the laptop not waking from sleep, waking up in my backpack and getting really hot while it’s supposed to be sleeping (these issues may or may not be related to my main issue below).
==== Main Issue ====
I have been having issues with my Windows installations. A few months ago, the windows installation broke. I don’t fully remember, but I think I recall having to use windows installation media to get a recovery environment on the device, and I messed around with the CLI a bit and found that the normal partitions weren’t on the drive (I don’t remember exactly), and I’m fairly sure I wasn’t able to access the file system. Regardless, the outcome here was that I had to completely reinstall windows, and it kept working mostly fine until now.
Today, the laptop failed to boot. When I pressed the power button to turn it on, it starts flashing on and off. Boot screen appears with Framework logo, windows loading spinner appears, then says “preparing automatic repair”. This whole time, the power button is flashing on-off. Then after a few seconds, it turns off.
I tried turning it on multiple times, and each time it did the same thing. A couple of times, it managed to boot into Windows recovery environment, presenting me with the recovery screen that said “It looks like Windows hasn’t loaded correctly”.
Here’s the thing, when I got home later, it booted up just fine. As if nothing had happened. Thankfully this has made it much easier to do diagnostics.
==== Troubleshooting ====
It looks like something to do with the storage. I have a SK Hynix Platinum P41 1TB SSD. Here’s a crystaldiskinfo screenshot:
Power on count: 189,429
Unsafe shutdown count: 103,591
So these abnormally high values basically confirms something wrong with either the SSD or the motherboard.
I have checked event viewer, here are some of the entries that may be relevant (excluding entries saying there was an unexpected shutdown)
- Kernel-Boot: Windows boot environment failed load the HSP firmware. StatusCode: {File Not Found}
The file %hs does not exist., Reason: Failed to detect HSP device. - volmgr: Crash dump initialization failed!
==== Additional Info ====
I installed the latest Framework driver bundle about a month ago, and also installed the AMD drivers from their website (the AMD drivers were actually from early this year, I had to roll back because the latest version was causing a bluescreen every time I connected my AirPods).
==== Questions ====
So I’m looking for some input on whether this is likely an SSD issue or a motherboard issue, to know which I need to potentially look into doing an RMA on (this is a device being used by a family member (not myself), so I am looking to minimise downtime).
