I received my new FW13 AMD 2.8k DIY yesterday, assembled it per the instruction and went on to install Windows 11 Pro, the latest 24H2 version that I downloaded from Microsoft. I had purchased my own DDR5 from Crucial - 2x32gb,and my own ssd - WD SN850X 4tb. All properly recognised.
It is with Windows setup that the fun began. The moment the install went to the telemetry questions, the computer crashed - to a grey screen. Had to press the power button for 10 seconds to get it to restart. Got back to the same point with telemetry questions, same crash. One time I managed to answer one question, hard freeze.
I burned another USB. Same exact thing. Then yet another USB, same results. All this while connected to a GaN 65w charger by Ugreen.
Then I gave up and installed Fedora. All worked the first time. I moved it to my external display connected via USB C. All worked.
This morning I decided to give Windows (and yet another USB stick) another go. Un plugged from the monitor and did the installation. Everything worked. Then I plugged it in, and immediately it crashed. Restarted. Crashed again. So I unplugged again. Started the install from the beginning. All worked again.
Thus every time I plug the cable I can boot up to the Welcome screen. Upon login I get the crash. One time it worked for about 10 minutes. And then it woulld crash when I open the start menu, switch to a different window, open the settings… Upon restart, it says it seems the computer did not shutdown properly and sometimes a restart can help fix things. I hit restart, I get BSOD. I did this 4 times, and every time the BSOD would have a different error code - I should have taken note, but didn’t, so I don’t remember exactly.
So now it runs Memory diagnostics from Windows. I started it while on battery. Then it restarted for the memory test, I plugged in the power, and it didn’t crash. Still doing the test.
Meanwhile, I had installed the driver bundle (but it made no difference). Bios is 3.05, which I see is the latest. Installed drivers from AMD site - Adrenaline something… Made no difference.
So,why on Windows, but not on Fedora? To me this means at least partially software is to blame. And no, using only Linux is not a solution, for work reasons.
Has anyone encountered anything similar? I welcome any tips, and thank you in advance!
