I have my Framework connected to the USB-C of my Dell U3419W monitor, but today all of a sudden it won’t display anything. It’s still charging over USB-PD and nothing else has changed - worked on Friday, didn’t work today.
Rebooting, resetting the display adapter etc. didn’t work.
The monitor doesn’t seem to get a signal from the Framework laptop any longer, but something has to be going on, because if I connect it to the front left adapter, it (Windows, that is) complains about it not supporting DP-Alt mode. It charges the laptop on all ports, but doesn’t get a picture on the back two ports.
My situation is only on one side (rear left), but otherwise sounds the same as yours. DP-Alt does not work, and a variety of USB devices do (and PD). My guess is either that (a) a connection to the GPU in particular is not working, or (b) some of the SS pairs are working, and some are not. Unfortunately, I have only been able to test with USB 2 and USB 3 2x1 devices, so only things using two pairs, not four; trying something dual-lane but not DP-Alt might distinguish between SS pair problems and GPU problems.
I will have to try that tomorrow. I honestly didn’t bother swapping the USB-C Adapter to the front right (where I always have a USB-A). But I will give it a try.
I should note that as far as I can tell, unfortunately, the problem seems to be a permanent one, and I haven’t found any way to resolve it. At the moment I’m gathering some data on my machine to send to support about it.
FWIW, swapping ports didn’t change anything, the front right port charges the laptop, but doesn’t get video across.
I tried different USB-C cables, but in any case ordered one that is certified for DP Alt mode because I don’t know what exactly the cables I had on hand were able to do.
I have now tried every combination of my monitor (U3419W), three cables and two laptops (FW 13 AMD and my old Dell XPS 13). Out of those, all but the FW worked. The Framework doesn’t get a display on any of the ports (while still at least charging).
The only thing I haven’t tested is a different monitor because I don’t have another one with USB-C connection.
I now contacted support, let’s see what they come up with.
