Driver timeout with external GPU

Hello, I’m using a Framework laptop 16, and I’m trying to use an eGPU (AMD 9060xt) connected externally via thunderbolt 3, but I have a couple of questions and frustrations with the drivers I’m running into.

Just today, my laptop would not start up for some reason, so I had to uninstall graphic drivers in safe mode with DDU and re-install them with the framework driver bundle. I used the most recent one “Framework_Laptop_16_AMD_Ryzen_7040_driver_bundle_W11_v3.01_2025_11_12” and also updated my BIOS to 4.02. This is where my issue starts, windows detects both the 780M and the 9060xt, but I’m only getting a display output on my laptop monitor and AMD adrenaline just says that there was a driver timeout.

I know that the general consensus is to only use drivers given from framework, but how do I use the external GPU without updating/messing up the drivers for the CPU/integrated graphics.

I’m having the exact same problem, FW16, 780M and an eGPU USB4 (Aoostar g2) with a 9060XT but I can’t get it to output video even if connected successfully and visible on device manager… have you found a solution?

I ended up just completely switching over to an Nvidia GPU. That worked perfectly fine because Nvidia uses completely different drivers. It’s crazy to me how it’s pretty much been two years since the release of the fw16 and we still can’t get drivers directly from AMD. Essentially making the entire laptop incompatible with any other AMD GPUs.

Thanks for replying, after a whole day of trial and errors I thought the problem was driver related… Guess I’ll buy an Nvidia GPU too.
