Expansion card idea

Just got my fw12!!!

In the future Id love to see a fw12 with a fingerprint reader on the keyboard but another idea I had which might be easier to implement is an expansion card that had a slimline fingerprint reader in it?

Duno if others are also looking for options to add fingerprint for login (and windows hello functionality for people who would want that). I was also looking to see if there’s a usb fingerprint reader that might fit into a 3d printed caddy if anyone could find one?

It can be done but expansion cards remain at the bottom so you need to kinda hold the laptop and put your finger below, or hold it with your fingers so it reads it. OR you design an expansion card bigger than the usual size for fingerprint reader module to leak out of the laptop dimensions just like the ethernet cable so you can just put your finger on top.

That’s actually a really cool idea for an expansion card. But probably only useful on the 12.

It would mostly only be useful for the 12 and maybe the desktop, since the 13 and 16 have readers built in.

Maybe you can build it around something like this: Amazon.com?

others have talked about this and posted some photos of modules that seem to fit okay in the space of an expansion module.

haven’t seen any 3d printed enclosures for these pop up yet.

I really want this, I’m also looking for a fingerprint reader for the FW12 as well (it’d be perfect for unlocking on tablet mode). I’ve been eying some of the fingerprint readers in the other thread, tempted to pick a few of them up to test them.

It would be really amazing if Framework makes an official one with the same reader as the one found in the 13 and 16 though, given those work as expected on Linux.
