Fast RAM for Ryzen AI 9?

Preordered a Ryzen AI9 (batch 2) and wondering about RAM.

I’m hoping to do some AI work with it and run a 7B LLM model, so I guess RAM is important since it’s also used as VRAM.

Thinking of 2 x 32 GB, but which brand/model?

Any recommendation to make the most of the processor/motherboard?

Framework has published a validated module list.

I believe all the validated modules have the CAS latency 46, except for the Kingston 4800MHz, which will have lower throughput than 5600MHz memory. If you are concerned about performance you should get 5600MHz RAM.

You can find RAM not on the validated module list that should be compatible, for instance on PC Part Picker
Kingston Fury and G.Skill make RAM that should be suitable with CAS latency 40, but since it is not validated there’s a chance the laptop won’t support its optimal performance profile or even be incompatible.

The performance impact of CAS latency is small in most tasks but may be noticeable (or at least measurable) in certain applications. I decided it wasn’t worth the price increase but if you need to max out your performance, there are potential gains.

Oh, I wasn’t aware of that list, thank you! So the only “fully validated” 32GB stick is their own, shame it’s almost twice the price of the others, purchased independently. Would have been nice of them to explain what “partial validation” means.

The ADATA stick is fully validated up to 16GB, but the 32GB version is “partially validated” only.

I think the Kingston Fury relies on XMP for its top speed, so it wouldn’t be a contender, but I might be wrong.

Thanks again for your help, appreciate it!

At least the KF556S40IBK2 don’t rely on xmp or expo to get jdec 5600cl40 on the framework. Others might though so it may be worth checking the datasheet for that.

Above 32GB sticks there is afaik only micron(crucial) that seem to only do 5600cl46.

That would be great but for example this guy hasn’t been able to get to 5600 with this specific model without XMP:

The memory kit mentioned there doesn’t even have xmp profiles, look at the datasheet here.

I know it’s different, but I have the Kingston Fury Impact, 5600mhz, CL40 RAM (2x32GB) in my FW 16 with the AMD 7840HS with zero problems. Recognized and automatically running at 5600, CL40 with no tweaking.

I think full vs. partial validation just has to do with the amount of testing they’ve done. Partial validation probably just means they tested it and it worked, but they haven’t done extensive, in-depth validation testing. That’s my interpretation of it. :man_shrugging:

I have the same kit in my 7480u 13 also working without issues out of the box. Slightly tempted to get me some of those new 64GB sticks but then again I don’t really need them they are just neat XD.

Same Fury Impacts here on the FW13 and withouth issues from day one.

Thanks guys, that’s encouraging.

Here’s hoping the Fury Impacts indeed do 5600 MHz on these boards natively.

I got mine pretty cheap from someone who probably had sime kind of issue like the reddit post XD

I happened to have just swapped from Crucial CL46 to Kingston Fury CL40 and benchmarked it here: Benchmarked CL40 vs CL46 ram [AMD 7640U, Linux]
