When I first got the laptop and did a fresh Windows install, the fingerprint reader worked fine. Later it stopped working at some point, but I didn’t really pay attention to it. Now that I want to sell the laptop, I’d like to get it working again.
When I try to set up a fingerprint, the screen goes dark and just hangs.
In Event Viewer (Applications and Services → Microsoft → Windows → Biometrics) I get this error:
The Windows Biometric Service secure component failed to delete an authorized enrollment for - (-) on sensor: Framework Fingerprint Reader (USB\VID_27C6&PID_609C\UID719E8EA9_XXXX_MOC_B0).
The operation failed with error: 0x8009801F.
I’ve tried deleting the biometric data from C:\Windows\System32\WinBioDatabase, re-enabling the device in Device Manager, and restarting the biometric services, but nothing has helped so far.
Other online searches suggested resetting the TPM might fix this issue though. You may wish to contact support though for their guidance.
Fingerprint readers unfortunately are really more of a novelty. It is comical how horribly implemented most of them are as electronic devices. Sadly the GoodIx module has separate databases for windows and Linux so even if you had it working under one side the other has a totally different database it reads from. This is by design from a security standpoint but makes it difficult to actually diagnose what is wrong since there are almost zero tools out there to correctly diagnose them.
Well that is an improvement. Just to be clear from before through, the Windows Biometric service was being disabled before trying to delete the databases correct?
Maybe search online for anyone who might have a utility that will talk to the reader and factory reset it? Maybe someone has had the issue before and GoodIx sent or had them download a little dev utility that the firmware team wrote.
