Following the liquid metal replacement, FW 16 won't charge battery [LINUX]

Batch 5 of Framework Laptop 16 (AMD Ryzen™ 7040 Series)

Fedora 42

After following the guide and replacing the liquid metal on my FW16 yesterday all seemed great after I re-assembled the laptop. I didn’t have it on the mains power but I was able to determine that all was working fine and indeed the tasks that previously caused the fans to sound like a jet engine just made them purr gently.

Pleased all was well, I put the laptop away overnight. But this morning when I returned to use it, the battery was discharged to 5% when I put it on charge with the usual charger and slot nothing seemed to be charging the battery. Despite switching slots, cables, chargers, the battery eventually discharged fully and the laptop shut down. FWIW I am using Fedora 42 with all up to date BIOS, drivers and OS patches.

I have tried stripping it back to take out the battery and replacing it back again, nothing seems to allow me to switch it on. I have tried holding power button in for > 30secs but this makes no difference. I have contacted support but perhaps I am missing a trick despite searching this community forum.

Any help gratefully received.

Thx

There are two answers that come to my head, probably not exhaustive list of possibilities though.

First, optimistic, I did have similar case, it was resolvable by removing the battery though. You still may attempt to perform full board reset - it is easy to google how to do it.

Second, pessimistic. If you were replacing the metal / fiddling with the laptop motherboard with battery plugged in, you might have short-circuited something accidentally and fry the charging controllers. This happens quite often, plenty of laptops ends up being serviced with such problems.

If you manage to charge the battery / turn the laptop on somehow, install fw-ectool and check EC logs after you plug in the charger: ectool console.

Thanks for the response. I have tried the first and even with everything removed apart from the RAM, the full board reset didn’t seem to work as there were no LED lights at all when I pressed the switch or let it go after the 2 seconds.

I only replaced the metal with the battery removed as per the guide.

However I think something is amiss with the charging as now the battery is discharged, nothing seems to be able to power it on and no light of any colour appears.
