Hello Framework Community,
I’m experiencing an issue with my Framework 13 (AMD AI 300 Series - Ryzen AI 7 350) that I purchased a few months ago. When I press the power button, the keyboard backlight and power button light turn on, but the screen remains completely black. I’m currently overseas and this is my only computing device, so getting this resolved is quite important for me.
Here are the details about my system:
OS: Windows 11 Pro
OS Release: Latest
Framework Product: Laptop 13
Generation: AMD AI 300 Series (Ryzen AI 7 350)
Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
Confirmed the battery seems charged (white charging LED).
Tried connecting to external displays via USB-C, but there was no output.
Performed a mainboard reset (chassis open switch press/release 10 times).
Tried booting without the SSD installed - the screen remained black, but the keyboard/power button lights cycled a few times before staying on.
Has anyone else experienced a similar issue or have any suggestions for troubleshooting steps I could try? I’ve also contacted official Framework Support, but wanted to see if the community had any insights.
Thanks in advance for any help!
Just wanted to give an update on the blank screen issue I was having after swapping RAM and reinstalling the SSD. Good news - it’s working now! The way it happened was a bit strange, though.
After still getting a blank screen with everything reassembled (including reapplying the silver grounding tape above the “made by the framework team with love” note), I tried a few things:
Powered it on (still blank).
Hit the power button again (seemed to go to sleep).
Removed the keyboard layer (red lights flashed due to SW3).
While the keyboard was off, I hit the power button again to wake it up, and the LCD suddenly turned on!
Since then, I’ve put the bezel back on and it seems to be working fine through a few restarts.
So, it’s working now, but I’m not entirely sure what the magic step was! Any thoughts on what might have caused this are welcome.
The RAM has to work for the display to then work.
When first installed, the memory can take up to 15 mins for memory training.
Did you leave it that long?
The RAM has always worked. This whole fiasco started randomly after about 50 hours on the computer. In my earlier messages I mentioned that amongst many of the concurrent things i tried, one of them was swapping the ram sticks. i do not recall how much time was spent after i swapped the ram sticks but its plausible that it was 15 or so minutes before booting up again.
The root solve could potentially be boiled down to me swapping the RAM sticks OR unplugging and re-plugging the LCD cable and reseating it + its silver ground tape. The only value that could be provided here is comparing it with other people or @frameworksupport based on their historical experience with similar issues.
I think I found the issue might have something to do with BitLocker. I woke up my computer from sleep while it was connected to my USB 4 USB c portable dock dongle thing, And it opened into BitLocker recovery mode which was a giant pain in the ass.
I just wanted to quickly add, for future folks, that I had the same issue the author experienced after the DIY build. I did the RAM/SSD reseat, but that did not resolve the issue.
What did work for me was a mainboard reset. I have the Ryzen AI 300 series of the Laptop 13, but the Fully Resetting the Mainboard State guide for the 11th Gen Intel Laptop 13 worked perfectly and there didn’t appear to be any difference in the steps for the Ryzen AI 300. I have 32GB of RAM and got a display output less than a minute after following the mainboard reset guide. Hope this helps others!
I had a similar issue recently and resolved it by rotating the RAM sticks. What’s interesting is that I reseated the RAM several times without the display returning, yet rotating the sticks seemed to do the trick. Seems superstitious. I definitely waited over 30 minutes for the RAM to retrain. Really wish there was a beep or light pattern(s) indicating a hardware issue.
I think there is a specific light pattern during training.
Unfortunately, very little clear reporting of what the problem actually is. There is a light pattern if you look at the leds on the side of the laptop.
Hi @James3 what is the light pattern on the side LEDs to watch for during memory retraining? I am experiencing similar issues with starting up (have made a separate topic post). After re-seating my RAM module I am waiting for 15 mins. What light pattern should happen?
