Framework 13 boot start issue

Hey all,

I’m new to the framework community (I just ordered and received my first framework 13 laptop on May 7th) and I’m really excited to have one but I’ve had nothing but issues ever since I received the laptop.

When I received the laptop it didn’t come with the standard framework screwdriver. Not the biggest issue but after I set up windows 11 and started getting familiar with the laptop it has been inexplicably crashing and breaking down on me.

I would only be able to use the laptop for about an hour. In this everything would work fine. However, after about half an hour to an hour of use time (whether writing emails or playing light video games) the screen would completely glitch out and fully crash usually into a windows blue screen, sometimes to just a black screen. I would have to hard shutdown the computer then wait for hours until it would just suddenly work again.

This morning the same crash happened while I was trying to tinker with it and I haven’t been able to get the computer started again since. I press the power button and it lights up but nothing will come onto the screen. I can’t even get into bios. I submitted some help tickets but was hoping the community might have something in the meantime.

I’ve got a few weeks of college left and I really need this laptop to work. thank you for your time.

You should absolutely contact support!

I agree with DHowett.
It sounds like you have a dead laptop there. Unlucky, as it is so new.
Contact framework support via their web page form.
You don’t say, but i am assuming all the bits are from FW. I.e. ram, ssd etc all from FW.

I just got it to start up around 9:30. I’m wondering if it has something to do with my hot swappable cards. I removed all of them before trying to boot and it booted right up. It’s been on for about 50 minutes with no issues though I haven’t really stress tested it yet. I’m trying to get assignments submitted before I do anything rash

yeah everything is stock from framework. I ordered a pre built with windows 11. haven’t had much luck with computers recently

I got a ticket in this evening! Thanks for the suggestion!

What did you have plugged in, and which ports did you have plugged into?
Each slot has different capabilities.
We could help you better if you told us more.

Hey James thanks for the suggestion. I removed all of my expansion cards last night and was able to get everything to boot correctly. I have since only put in the two cards that are currently inside the computer. The orange one is a USB-C for charging while the aluminum one is USB-A for my mouse. The two uninserted cards are what I usually had in the laptop while using it. The orange one is another USB-C that I had in there to fill the slot and the other aluminum is a 1TB expansion cards. I also have a SD card reader and HDMI card that I tried to use when I first got the computer.

Those, in the picture, should all work ok.
I was guessing that maybe you have external monitors, or docks connected, and maybe they were causing problems.

You can probably narrow it down further to find out which of the 2 remaining cards cause the problem.
FYI, the USB-C cards are 100% passive, they just pass through the USB-C signal, but I guess could be faulty in some way.
I am not sure how well RF shielded the USB-C cards are, so if you have a RF interference source near by, that might be contributing to the problem, but I have never seen anyone else have that cause the laptop to fail to boot up. All RF interference normally causes, is just a failure of the device to connect.

At least you can now get on with your urgent work.
