Framework 13 keyboard backlight not working

Hi! I got my Framework 13 (AMD Ryzen 7640) about 2 weeks ago and I’ve been super happy with it! I just realised that the keyboard is supposed to have a backlight, but mine doesn’t appear to work.

I’ve never ever seen the keyboard backlight turn on, I genuinely didn’t think there was one lol. I’m on a fresh install of Windows 11 24H2, 26100.3476, I can’t find any backlight options in Windows, and FN+Spacebar doesn’t appear to do anything, even in the BIOS.

I also recently set up a dual boot with Kubuntu and while there’s a keyboard backlight option there, it also doesn’t do anything.

Also, I’m not sure if this is relevant, but ever since I got the laptop, the power button is a bit slanted/depressed in the top right at all times, and looking at it even closely now, I’ve just noticed that the light is a bit dimmer in the top right of it too…

I tried reconnecting the keyboard cable on the motherboard (the one you’re supposed to do during setup) with no luck either. The entire laptop and keyboard seems to otherwise work entirely fine. What should I do now?

Welcome to the forum, sorry this is what brings you here.

Hmm, you could check the backlight cable connection:
Touchpad Replacement Guide - Step 6 and Touchpad Replacement Guide - Step 16 & 17. But it feels doubtful that’s the issue.

Could also check the other end of this cable. That it’s fully inserted and that the latch is down. See the latch pictures for the backlight cable.

Presuming those aren’t it, feels like time to contact support. frame.work/contact-us

I apologise for the delayed reply, I’ve been a bit sick and haven’t been able to get to this until now.

Thanks for the welcome! It’s all good, I’m just glad that there is a forum for my laptop lol, I can’t say any prior laptops I’ve owned have had such a community.

Thank you for linking those guides! I wasn’t aware there was a separate backlight cable connector, the DIY setup guide doesn’t mention it. I had a look at mine and it simply wasn’t connected. I don’t believe it was apart of the DIY setup process, and the latch was down so it likely didn’t “fall out”, so I guess mine wasn’t connected at the factory perhaps? Either way, reconnecting it myself seems to have done the trick and the backlight now works, thanks for the help!

Although I’m not too sure if my power button is considered “normal” or if I should do anything about it. From my (unfortunately limited) experience so far it seems to work fine, even the fingerprint reader, it’s just a bit dimmer/slanted in the corner. I’ve attached a photo but it’s a bit hard to capture it being slanted (you can definitely feel it though). I’ll probably leave it for now but hopefully it doesn’t start malfunctioning later on.

Oof, well, glad you didn’t have to get a replacement at least. Happy the links helped. Honestly didn’t expect you to find an fixable issue there, but I see, one can never know!

Yeah, sounds like a slip up at the factory. That’s not a cable which you normally need to connect when you get the “DIY” Framework option.
