Framework 13 ryzan fan not turning on when booting

Hello all!

I am a happy new owner of a Framework 13 Ryzen 5 7040 series DIY build laptop.

I have not yet installed an OS and have only booted the device to the boot manager to test correct installation of memory and storage and functionality of the keyboard panel.

One issue that I have noticed that concerns me is the lack of action from the fan:

The fan does not spin up, and the laptop back does warm just from the boot manager.

I have heard of fan curves that aggressively favour a silent fan and so many not activate on ‘lower’ hot temps.

It is newly built yesterday, same day as arrival.

Has anyone else experienced this and is this likely to be a mechanical issue, a driver issue or an issue with the EC, or am I simply overreacting?

If there is a problem, how can I troubleshoot and approach solving it.

Cheers all,

Happy holidays!

I don’t think you need to worry.
There is a tool, “ectool” that you can use to force the fans on to test them.
sudo ectool fanduty 100
to turn the fans on.
sudo ectool autofanctl
to switch back to automatic.

But in general, the fans stay off, or very slow until really needed.
For things like web browsing and watching videos, the fans will probably stay off.

It should be fine because the fans very rarely come on anyway.
If you are worried use the tool suggested by James3 .

Congrats on the new Framework 13! Welcome to the community @gk1.

The new Cinebench 2026 was reported today by a few outlets. Any basic game or benchmarking tool will load up the CPU just fine to produce some heat.

Enjoy the new machine! Have fun with Linux or Windows; they both run great on it.
