Framework 16 external monitor suddenly doesn't work

I had been enjoying my Framework 16 laptop (a work machine) for a few months now. The driver package had to be installed in order to get it working with my external display, but after that everything was smooth. The BIOS version was 3.05. Running Windows 11 Pro.

Here’s the drivers:

A couple Fridays ago I shut my computer down and let it run some Windows updates. The next Monday morning I turned on the laptop and the external display no longer worked. I had it connected via Firewire / USB C and it had been fine like that for months.

I tried reinstalling the drivers but it didn’t do the trick this time. I looked in Device Manager but it did not even list my display.

I tried a direct HDMI cable via the HDMI expansion card (slot 2), and this caused the display to seem like it was using the external monitor for a second (on the Framework’s built-in display). It even listed my external monitor (BenQ PD2725U) in Device Manager. But alas, the external display did not turn on and when I press the source button on the BenQ, it said “No Signal Detected!”

After many back and forth emails with Framework support, we found the solution!

Resetting the BIOS was what got the external displays working again. Tap F2 while booting, then choose Setup Utility, then press F9 to reset the BIOS, then press F10 to save and exit.

What about reinstalling the drivers?
