Hey all,
When I plug in my laptop it almost immediately starts revving up to max and just stay there until I unplug it. Anyone know why this would be? It’s not even hot or running anything resource intensive, just seems to be happening for no reason. When it’s not plugged in the fan works normally (Ramps when hot, low when cool).
Welcome to the forum!
When the laptop is plugged in, it automatically switches to a higher performance mode which draws more power and produces more heat. To dissipate this heat, the fan speed has to be increase. To change this, on Windows, you can go to your battery settings and change your performance mode to Balanced or Power Efficiency. On Linux, it depends on what type of power profile package you are using.
Yep, that’s just how it is. Immediately the CPU is no longer throttled and allowed to turbo boost, which immediately overheats it and requests the fans. I work around this by just being in Windows 11 “Best power efficiency” mode all the time. Sad that I have to leave performance on the table but it’s still plenty powerful enough in this mode. Just switch to a higher power mode whenever you need more and don’t care about the fan noise.
