Framework 16 re-occurring BSOD

Hello! I recently hooked my dad up with a Framework 16 for a new work computer on the go designing drawings in AutoCAD. We optioned his with the Ryzen 9, discrete GPU module, 32GB of RAM, Windows 11, and a 2TB WD Black SN770 2TB SSD. He’s had the laptop for about a month, maybe month and a half and it’s been very smooth until this past week.

Out of nowhere, it started getting a recurring, sporadic BSOD. It’ll run for a little while, then crash. In some cases after it restarts it’ll immediately crash again. After some digging, it looks like I narrowed it down to some issue related to the storage. I can’t physically check the hardware myself as I’m doing this remotely, he and I are in different states. I did check windows event viewer and found a lot of errors with stornvme as the source. It’s also not able to write a dump file. At least when I look for them, it’s not there. I did catch a glimpse at one of the errors from the BSOD and it said "CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED. Upon doing some research.

I have been using ChatGPT to help diagnose the issue, but I do understand it’s not always accurate, hence why I’m here to verify with others to see if it is in fact providing the correct diagnosis and solutions. ChatGPT does appear to be finding the problem and solution based on what I’ve read online, especially with this particular SSD. It’s suggesting to update the driver using WD Dashboard, which we will be attempting when he gets home. Although the computer does crash, it does still somewhat function for him, and we’d rather leave it be. Once he’s home he can use the desktop I built him a few years back to get work done.

I would also like to see if anyone else has experienced a similar problem and see if they found a solution. If not, I’ll be sure to post my findings.

I know you’ve said you narrowed it down to a storage issue, but is there any chance there’s a USB webcam plugged in? This sounds a lot like what I was experiencing… External webcam causing system instability and crashes - Community Support - Framework Community

Ok we finally were able to run the update on the hard drive using this utility. It can be done with the drive inside the machine, even if it is your boot drive: Western Digital Dashboard
The update took all of like 5 seconds then we restarted the computer. We ran this update a few days ago, he’s been doing work on the laptop putting it through its paces and it hasn’t crashed on him since.

IT DOES WARN YOU THERE MAY BE A RISK OF DATA LOSS, SO MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP IMPORTANT DATA BEFORE RUNNING THE UPDATE.
