Framework 16 - trying to fix GPU drivers, now stuck with a white screen

  • Which OS: Windows 11 Pro
  • Which release of your OS: 23H2
  • Which Framework product: Laptop 16

So, I’ve been having GPU issues ever since the latest driver update package. Maybe it’s because I’m on W11 23H2, when the update package said it was for 24H2? I had to roll back to 23H2 due to the issues with 24H2…

So, I’ve trying different things since then… rolling back drivers, installing latest from AMD, etc… None really seemed to fix the problems I was having. I’ve tried using DDU to completely clean it and start over… still issues.

So… Now I’ve gotten to a point where I can’t boot into Windows normally anymore. It just results in a white screen.

So, I try to start in Safe Mode, that still works thankfully. So, I try to run the older version of the Framework driver package in Safe Mode…

“Please run as an administrator”

I did. I should have the admin permissions to run this. I even select Run as Administrator, and still the same message. I enable the hidden “Administrator” user and login as that, still same message.

So, I’m not sure what to do here. How can I run something as admin in Safe Mode? Or what can I do to fix the white screen so I can fix the drivers in normal mode?

[edit] After further struggling, I managed to fix it by manually updating the driver for the Radeon 780M while in Safe Mode…

So, entire problem solved or partly solved and somewhat functional with the 780M? My thought was to nuke the OS and reinstall it. After you’ve backed up your files of course.

Yep, completely resolved. After fixing the 780M driver in Safe Mode, I was able to boot back into regular mode again. From there, I ran the Framework driver installer from October 2024 (as I’ve had issues with the driver installer from May 2025, or newer directly from AMD), and everything’s fine. No screen flashings or anything.
