Framework 16 with new Ryzen AI motherboard doesn't show display

OS: Windows 11, but will be doing a clean install when I can get this working

Framework product: Framework 16 1st Overkill version with a newly installed Ryzen AI 300 motherboard.

So after installing the motherboard, I get keyboard lights and the LED module seems to power on, plus it seems to sleep properly, but I get no fan activity, and no display output.

I’m at a loss of what to do. I’ve double and triple checked all the connections.

On further testing, looks like my Ryzen AI motherboard was DOA, possible RMA?

What ram chip make, model do you have?

Whatever Framework sells, DMIDecode on a Linux live medium gives A-Data AD5S560032G-SFW, 64GB spread across 2 32GB DIMMs.

The RAM looks OK. In general, you will not get any display if the RAM is not working.
Maybe try re-seating the RAM, or maybe one chip at a time, trying to get something to display.
On the FW16, the display cable can become disconnected either end.
Check that the display cable is a good fit both on the mainboard, and also the on the display end.

I’ve verified it’s not display side, since it works fine with the old motherboard, I’ll try with one stick, though

So I’ve tried with one stick, still the same issue, no diagnostic codes I can see on either LED on the sides of the laptop. I’ll try resetting the BIOS tomorrow, see if it’s corrupt settings.

Edit: On further testing and leaving it on for a while, the fans on the Radeon graphics module spin up after a while, so possibly not a dead motherboard? I’ll leave it running overnight, see if it’s just taking a long time to train the one stick of ram I have in it.

Edit 2: Fans stay on, screen stays black, keyboard lights up, and nothing else happens, even when left running for 8+ hours overnight. Seems to be a DOA motherboard. Going to see where contacting support gets me.

New update: on resetting the BIOS, it just endlessly stays on blinking red/blue lights. I’ve heard that can either mean a dead board, or memory training.

I don’t think it would do memory training for a half hour or longer.
