Brand new framework 16 won't turn on

I just unboxed and put together my framework 16 and the device isn’t turning on properly. Power light comes on but screen does not. Did I do something wrong?

The display needs the RAM to work before the screen works. So, getting the RAM to work is the first thing to focus on. What RAM chips do you have? Make, Model?
To diagnose the problem try:

  1. Remove SSD, Wifi card.
  2. Check there are not bent pins on the RAM sockets. Insert just one RAM chip carefully, following the Framework guides on their web site.
  3. Power on, and wait (can sometimes take 15 mins to “train” the RAM)
  4. Eventually the Screen should show something. (Once the RAM is working)
  5. If no screen, after a minute or two, the LED lights might flash in a pattern (The LED next to the USB-C sockets on the side.) The pattern can tell you what is wrong.
If the screen does come on, you can try adding both RAM chips and the SSD, Wifi to find out which one caused the problem.
Note, sometimes a faulting battery can cause what you are seeing, but most often it is the RAM and not waiting long enough for the RAM training.

Crucial 2x 48gb ddr5-5600 sodium 1.1v cl46 RAM

framework 16 inch is kinda stricted to which RAM modules are compatible.

So either you check your modules are listed here

Framework 16 with Ryzen 7040 Series:
What DRAM/memory is supported by Framework Laptop 16? (AMD Ryzen™ 7040 Series)

Framework 16 with Ryzen AI 300 Series:

What DRAM/memory is supported by Framework Laptop 16? (AMD Ryzen™ AI 300 Series)

Some modules that are not listed also works are following:

Kingston Fury Impact 64GB (2x32GB) / 5600Mhz / CL40 which also works that i can confirm!

So is the issue that I got the wrong ram?

I can confirm as well that Kingston Fury Impact 64GB (2x32GB) / 5600Mhz / CL40 works on BOTH the FW16 Ryzen 9 7940HS and FW16 Ryzen Ai HX370. I have personally tested both and ran Win11 Pro 25H2 and Ubuntu 25.10 with no issues

What is the actual model numbers written on the ram chips?
It is true the AMD mainboards are a bit fussy about RAM.

Hopefully the ones you have match from that list.

There have been reports of the Kingston Fury Impact not working on the AMD AI 300 mainboards
Notice the absence of the Kingston Fury from the compatibility list.

could be possible you got pair of RAM modules that may not work at all.

When i installed mine it flashed orange, blue on side light and i saw weak backlight on panel lit up but nothing.

So i left it like that and all of sudden it gave me screen where it shows input modules where missing, So if that doesn’t happen on yours. Then you sadly got modules that are not compatible

incorrect, some kingston fury impact works on AI board since i got pair 2x 32GB = 64GB DDR5 5600MHz of Kingston Fury Impact and my Framework 16 with Ryzen AI 300 series boots up fine and detects full 64GB RAM.

But there is multiple Kingston Fury Impact models so it depends which ones you got.

I can also confirm this works fine as well. I have it installed in my wife’s FW16 Ryzen 9 7940HS:
Ripjaws DDR5 SO-DIMM DDR5-5600 CL40 64GB (2x32GB)

I can confirm as well that Kingston Fury Impact 64GB (2x32GB) / 5600Mhz / CL40 works on BOTH the FW16 Ryzen 9 7940HS and FW16 Ryzen Ai HX370. I have personally tested both and ran Win11 Pro 25H2 and Ubuntu 25.10 with no issues. It is currently installed (on his machine I am tying on) which is a FW16 Ai 9 HX370…. again I can only relate from my personal experience and cant speak for others.

Mine had an orange light on the side when plugged in but I didn’t notice if it was flashing or not

Do this power it on without keyboard and touchpad etc.

Look to right on the plate you have small cut out you will see there if it flashes from orange to blue and then orange and so on. you can also see the right light on outside that will show same.

If this happens let it be and see if screen turns on with input modules missing screen, if that happens insert the keyboard etc untill it says “All input modules detected” then press F button for boot and spam F2 if you manage to enter Bios then look in top left corner for amount of RAM if it detects the full amount. Then you’re good to go

It works. It is the CL40 5600.

Yes, mine is also CL40, exactly same as yours

I was refering to James3 who claimed that Kingston Fury Impact isn’t working on Ryzen AI 300 Series. Which is wrong.

I am only repeating what others have said. E.g.

The OP is using Crucial RAM, and although the picture they posted is very fuzzy, it looks like they are using compatible Crucial RAM chips.

Yes can confirm it’s on the list of working ram it’s the last one on the list under working

I have the 300 series btw

Did you try just one chip at a time, and not both in at the same time. Sometimes that helps.
