Framework (2nd Gen) Event is live on February 25th

A while ago Framework teased a new product line that was basically unrelated to the laptop program (though later the 16 did come out). It was hypothesized at the time this meant either phones or, based on a passing comment regarding toner, printers. To my knowledge, we still haven’t seen it. For this though, since the event is called “2nd Gen”, I suspect we’ll see multiple products, but my spidey sense says gaming handheld due to the lanparty/cheetos images. At a minimum I think the 13" is getting a serious overhaul since Marketplace has so many ways to get and use a 13-in body.
Yoga has completely lost me, they can’t use a Lenovo brand name to tease their own convertible, can they?

They can always rely on people thinking of Yoga, and officially claim they mean flexible or smth.

Phones would be a REALLY bad idea, as the market is oversaturated, it took google years to break even and there already are multiple foss/repairable smartphones out there that flopped, and Fairphone seems to barely hold on.

Couldn’t have come at a better time, was planning to get a FW13 on my trip to Europe in a month or so, but now am probably going to hold off until the event…

Color wheel probably isn’t chassis colors, they’ve mentioned in a short that the reason Framework only sell one color is to skip on the dyeing process altogether, for environment-friendliness. The fact that it and the yoga pose, which can be interpreted as “flexibility”, are together, make me think that it’s more colors for the other expansion cards.

Lightning bolt… God, please let it be TB5. Also could just mean something fast. New-gen AMD mainboards? Edit: 240W charging!

As for the last one, LAN+Gaming+Cheetos is probably something to do with portable gaming. My likely guess is new GPU expansions for the 16, buuttt… new SteamOS console, maybe??

This is literally the only time in the last 5 years I’ve been excited for a company tech presentation lol

Finally, they will release security firmware updates more often as they promised long ago, (but still did not achieve):

Exciting stuff, but given most people are going to be live streaming it is probably best stating the time in UTC in addition to local. I, for one, have no idea off the top of my head which time zone PST is.

In case anyone else needs it, it is scheduled for 18:30 UTC

Yoga training gives you a FIRM CORE and BOOTY = FIRMWARE COREBOOT.

That’s it, no need to speculate more. The rest are just red herrings.

Some on reddit have suggested one of them may be pointing to a Frame Deck handheld device. Considering someone’s already done it with the 13’s mobo, I must admit it has some merit.

Just note that the only thing that is AI generated in my comment is the formatted list with comments and the conclusion. I had to feed it the list of items, and you can get that from the name of the respective images.

My guesses from the hints:

  1. :person_in_lotus_position:Yoga emoji: 360 Hinge form-factor. Validating their ability to provide a whole “chassis” in their assembly line lately gives me hope for this. I selfishly really hope that this is backwards compatible with the parts I have already bought because I’ve been dreaming to use Rnote with my Framework.

  2. :zap:Bolt emoji: 240w PD Charger for the Framework 16. TheVerge had already reported on this, and I guess it would make sense with …

  3. :video_game: Gaming emojis: RTX 5090 GPU for the Framework 16. The Framework e-mail says “We will be opening pre-orders on at least one new item that day”, and Nvidia is allowing partners to open preorders for RTX cards on the 25th. It would be such a wonderful moment for Framework to be out of the gate making a statement about how up-to-date they are starting to be.

My guess is

  • The 1st 2 icons (colors, yoga): Framework Tablet 11 with some color selections. The yoga picture makes me imagine Lenovo Yoga. However, I assume their target is a counter device for iPad Pro. iPad Pro/iPad Air/iPad/iPad Mini offers one or two of the 13, 11 (10.9), or 8.3 inches. So, probably Framework takes the middle size of the 3 sizes. That is 11 inches. I hope it will offer a detachable keyboard like an iPad or Microsoft Surface Go. With the detachable keyboard, we can expect a thriving keyboard ecosystem by makers. However, it may be a 2-in-1 attached keyboard like this Lenovo Yoga 2-in-1 Laptop.
  • The 2nd one icon (thunder): Higher Wh battery (higher than 61Wh)
  • The 3rd 3 icons (passing food, gaming controller, snack): Framework’s new expansion cards.
    • Gaming controller expansion card like this
    • Empty expansion card like this. It is good to store a snack or food.

Thanks for this! To add to helping with date time conversions, here’s a link to Dateful, which I believe should convert that time stamp into whatever your local timestamp is.

Whatever it is, I’m hoping that it isn’t a new Framework 16, as I finally caved and bought one last week and it got here yesterday. Going to feel like an idiot if I could have waited a couple weeks and ordered one that (maybe) is significantly better, even if it would come with a delay due to preorder queues.

I think you don’t need to calculate your timezone. At the Youtube video screen’s left bottom corner, there is text “Live in 13 days February 25 at NN:NN PM or AM” on your local timezone set on Youtube.

might be reaching but framework did update the main site a bit ago (around feb 6th according to wayback), it went from saying framework laptop in the header with the 13 and 16 in a drop down to just showing them in the main header as laptop 13 and laptop 16. I think it could mean that framework is releasing a new product category.

Yeah, I got that and that was never why I was mad to begin with

Honestly, I’m a tiny bit concerned that Framework may be biting off more than they can chew if they go too wildly into new markets. They already can’t keep up from a software standpoint, we’re woefully behind on critical vulnerability patches in the firmware.

So from a selfish perspective I’d like them to only be bringing out maybe a new GPU and a new hinge design or something, stuff that doesn’t take away resources. But I doubt they’d be hyping that up. :joy:

Oh no, I don’t have enough money saved. Hope the shipping backlog is not huge like it was with FL16

Best of luck with the lauch! It’s really very exciting news!

Oh boy, they are bringing the hype with the announcement. I initially didn’t want to speculate too grand / hope too high but

Bigger set of announcements than Framework Laptop 16? Damn, a lot is on the table. I think people covered everything that is a likely possibility.

I guess and hope for

  • OLED screen (Color wheel hint)
  • 2-in-1 convertable touchscreen device (:person_in_lotus_position: Yoga pose flexible hint)
  • Maybe a powerbank case for old FWL13 batteries or an official 240W Framework power supply (:zap: lightening bolt hint)
  • Hoping for a Framework steamdeck because it would be awesome (:video_game: videogame party hint)
  • Also a new AMD GPU module and new FWL16 mainboard. Because it’s time, and one has to update models to stay current

The OLED people have been asking for in some form for a long time. Might be for the FWL13 or an option for the 2-in-1 convertable touchscreen device. It could just be something else “colorful” but hey, we’re hopping high.
The flexible yoga pose has to be for something, it could just be flexible in general. Framework devices already certainly count as flexible with rearrangeable ports, the FWL16 keyboard, the general repairable and DIY build options.
The gaming hints could just be FWL16 updates, but they do say big announcements are coming.

Of course. I just received my framework laptop (13) yesterday. At least it’s upgradable.
