We probably still have a bit of a wait, but I’m getting excited seeing the first batch start to ship!
Ordered April 12, 2025
128GB, full system
I have a Thunderbolt KVM that’s connected to my work MacBook and my personal Framework 13 (currently a first-gen AMD mobo). This will take the 13’s spot (the 13 will get a lot less use when I’m at home). I like that I can connect a USB-C port to the Desktop and drive the display that way, rather than needing to fiddle with DisplayPort→USB-C injectors like I would for most desktops.
I mainly ordered this to experiment with running LLMs locally. I use LLMs extensively as an end-user in my software dev workflow, but I feel it’s essential that I continue to learn how they work at more fundamental levels.
I’m also interested to see how this runs Factorio—my megabase got to be too much for my 13…
Nice, my factorio base so far is well within the limits of my 5700G, but I’m sure I’ll be able to make it much larger bases with 8 more 50% faster cores.
Also batch 10. Thinking about installing NixOS and ollama for local LLMs, hopefully with Home Assitant using it. Probably install Frigate on a Docker container.
Love the front panel designer! I’ve got an OpenSCAD script that does horizontal, diagonal, all the combos of those, honeycomb, and multi segment blocks. As soon as I stop tweaking it, I’ll post it on github.
Summary of my impressions with feedback so far from earlier batches. Following the Desktop forum threads closely. Hoping for shipping end of October, or more realistically around mid November.
Hope it’s just something wrong in their setup or a fault in their unit. Not gonna cancel my order, as I NEED to have the form factor But would be a bummer if that experience was true for everyone.
Other than that mostly feedback about the PCI extension slot capabilities. Not planning on using that anyway… at least not for an external graphics card. Maybe to expand M2 slots, but two are plenty for my use case at the moment.
Wondering why the Desktop does not get official Ubuntu support.
AI on that platform + Linux in general seems to be a bit of WIP with everything working better every day. Most kinks seem to be worked out already before batch 10 ships. At least for general AI applications and prototyping. Not necessarily getting every bit of performance out. Which again is fine for me.
Overall still hyped and can’t wait to join the club.
Limping along here on an Intel I5-750 from late 2009 (I think). It’s been decent over the years but now USB is sometimes missing after startups, booting is extremely slow, I get a lockup about once a day. It is time.. batch 10 shipments cannot come soon enough. My biggest fear is probably a tariff snafu of some sort…
Waiting on my 128 GB - currently running Windows 10 on a frankenbuild (6 GB RTX 2060) w/ 96 GB of 3 different sets of RAM (different sizes, timings, it’s a mess). Planning on running Omarchy (in preparation, I migrated my Framework 13 from Win11 last week).
I’ll be using the new Framework Desktop for local LLM (DSPy programs, embeddings, etc.), python & rails dev as well as Steam games.
Looks like Batches 7, 8, and 9 are all being sent out at the same time….. I was assuming we wouldn’t see Batch 10 until Middle of October, but we could be next week?!?!
I’m from batch 12, but keeping an eye on the guild threads to see what’s going on. A true legend from the batch 7 guild tracked the times between prep emails in this reply Framework Desktop Batch 7 Guild - #53 by PenTurDucKenLinE
9 days between batch 6 and 7’s emails, so if you apply that here you could potentially be looking at 26/09 to receive the emails, but… since they’re doing batches 6-8 all in one go, who knows how long it’ll be for 10.
I suspect that since they started batch 1 a bit late you may find that it’ll be the first week of October before the next batch starts, but I’d love to be wrong as that’ll mean I’m getting mine sooner too!
