FW13 only boots when charging

Hey guys, i recently bought a used Framework 13 (11th gen Intel) and noticed that i can only boot it when i’m charging it, even if Windows 11 reports a full battery after booting.

Waking the FW up from standby and even shutting it down and then starting it works fine, only booting after it was turned off for a few hours is buggy.

When i try to start it without it being plugged in, i get no reaction at all (No lights or anything).

When i bought the FW it had an issue with the fingerprint sensor / power button getting unbearably hot (but working) while it was running. I bought a new Input Cover and the sensor was fixed, but maybe it’s got something to do with that?
The boot issue was there even with the old input cover, but maybe the overheating was just a symptom.

Any ideas would be appreciated, as i have no clue how to approach this.

CMOS battery is dead. Will need a new one or you can get the CMOS replacement module (will require some soldering).

I haven’t looked, but the CMOS battery is presumably a CR2032 like everyone else, and are just standard batteries you can buy anywhere. You might even have some lying around?

Definitely try swapping that out.

The thought that laptops have CMOS batteries too didn’t even cross my mind, thank you.

The FW uses ML1220, but the store near me only had CR1220 batteries.
Can i use those too or will the FW try to recharge the CR battery?

I don’t know any more than you do, but a quick google suggests heck no.

Not only Using a CR battery to replace the CMOS battery for a very specific issue. : framework, but also ML means rechargable and CR means not, and it sounds like, reading around, your laptop will happily attempt to recharge the non-rechargable CR battery if you put it in there, which I’d guess you definitely don’t want.

Absolutely do not use a CR1220. You must use a ML1220

What if you use a diode to block charging the CR1220/CR2032?

I now ordered a ML1220 just to be safe, thanks for all your replies.
Will take some time to arrive but i’m pretty sure the CMOS battery is the cause, so i’ll mark this as solved.
