7840hs with 7700s

Bought a “Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 5 Smart Dock 7500 40BA0265EU” docking station because it can deliver 180W over a single usb-c cable. I know that the 7840hs is usb4 and not tb5, but that shouldnt be an issue for usb-c power delivery as far as I understand.

Issue is, the dock randomly disconnects, but only under heavy power consumption. It’s stable on the desktop for hours without problems, but during gaming it will just randomly disconnect. Monitor is connected directly to the 7700s, not the dock. There are no issues when the Framework charger (180W) is connected as well, but that defeats the point of buying a 180W dock. kernel cmdlines pcie_acpm=off and pcie_port_pm=off have been tried unsuccesfully. USB-Autosuspend for the dock has been disabled in tlp.

dmesg logs during disconnection (dmesg before, dmesg after, then diff):

I’ve also tried all four usb-c ports on the laptop and disconnected the dock from the laptop and its power brick for about ten minutes. Dock firmware is up-to-date according to fwupd (I installed an update right after unpacking the dock).

I found a post by someone here who had similar issues with this dock, he solved it by disabling mux in the amd driver settings. I don’t have access to anything like that on linux.

I would assume that it’s power draw related, but I don’t know how to fix this.

I’m not sure there is a way to fix this. I don’t use a dock, and I get momentary power drops across all my usb ports (including the keyboard/trackpad/numpad), even if there’s no expansion card in use.

I’d be interested in hearing if someone else has a solution though.

Check how often the fwupd timer is going off and maybe even disable it. I had huge issues with the PD controller crapping out when fwupd was checking for updates and that helped.

Regarding `ucsi_acpi USBC000:00: unknown error 256, there’s this:

thanks, but fwupd does not run automatically on void. it only runs when called on via shell, so there’s no background processes to disable

It doesn’t run automatically on my system (Gentoo) either, for whatever that’s worth.
