FW16 sometimes powers-off when USB charger removed

Hi everyone!

I’m trying to diagnose an issue with my new second-hand FW16, which I got last week. Everything has been working like a dream, except that sometimes, for no reason I can determine, the power just goes off if I remove the laptop from its charger. There’s nothing in the logs (journalctl), and the laptop isn’t doing any heavy tasks (less than 5% cpu usage, no graphical utilities running), and the battery is at my charge limit (85%). It’s just like what you’d expect if one yanked the power out of a desktop; everything snaps off immediately.

The tricky part of this is that it’s not consistent. Sometimes I unplug fine, sometimes not. I believe there was at least one instance where the laptop was suspended and removing the charger caused it to die. The problem definitely occurs (intermittently) with the back-right USB port; I’m still testing if it happens with the back-left port.

The power button can be used to turn the laptop back on just fine, so the battery isn’t fully disconnected or anything. And sometimes it can be disconnected just fine.

I’m using the stock 180W charger that came with the laptop.

Any advice or insights would be appreciated. My current workaround is to hibernate to disk (I guess hybrid suspend-hibernate would also work), but if I can diagnose and fix the issue I’m going to be so much happier.

Many thanks!

Edit: It sounds very similar to this report on the FW13, which seems to have affected multiple people, but I can’t find if there was any resolution.

Confirming this also happens with the rear-left USB port, including when the laptop is suspended.

I’ve noticed that when at the charge limit (85%) the laptop would sometimes report that it was running on battery for a few seconds before switching back to AC. I’ve disabled the charge limit for now, in case this is in any way related.
