I was installing my upgraded display kit and noticed that there were two small screw heads clinging to the magnets on the lower bezel area. Upon closer inspection, it seems these screws have been sheared off by the hinge. The hinges were replaced ~2 years ago with the heavier hinges, and the laptop has been used daily since then. Is this fine? It feels OK, but I am worried that increased load could rip out the other screws. Has anyone else had this problem? I would like to avoid the MSI™ authentic experience if possible.
My thought as well. You’re better off with lesser load per screw. Wonder how you can get the rest of the screw out though.
I guess I’m not the only one, same thing happened here.
Just upgraded my display a couple days ago but heard some rattling inside D:
Turns out it was these two screws that broke off.
Wondering if I should get a hinge replacement
I ran into a similar problem on my 12th gen Intel. The lid on my Framework 13 became very floppy and while replacing the OG hinge on the left of the laptop I found that it was leaking grease. After removing the hinge the 3rd screw closest to the middle of the laptop had it’s screw head snapped off. The hinge replacement went fine but it’s obviously not easy to replace the screw in the lid without figuring some way to remove the broken screw.
How did you manage to remove the broken screws ?
I just received my set of 4kg hinges and discovered the left small screw was broken. I tried to solder a piece of cable to it to be able to unscrew it but it did not work.
I reassembled my laptop without that screw… but I would feel safer with it.
I left the broken screw and like you just reassembled with using only 2 of the 3 screws for the left hinge.
It doesn’t seem like it’d be easy to fix that without replacing the lid, which is something that I might do in the future.
That being said, the lid still seems to be holding up okay without this one screw, so as long as you’re not terribly rough opening the lid you might be okay.
Okay, thank you ![]()
We will see how it ends with the new 4kg hinge set. It’s way stiffer than the original leaking one that broke a screw… I am not that confident but anyway I still can buy a new cover and a set of screws. That option is way better than any other laptop maker offers as far as I know !
While I’m not amazed at the build quality of my Framework 13, I can’t deny that parts for the machine are affordable compared to other vendors. Being able to buy a new lid without an LCD makes fixing up the machine significantly more affordable.
My Intel 12th gen motherboard is still pretty good and along with Framework releasing firmware updates more frequently these days, it’s still a very usable machine and replacing parts due to wear and tear is much better than spending on an entirely new machine.
I agree, I bought the 12th gen too. It was kind of a leap of faith about durability. I thought I might change the motherboard at a fraction of the cost of a new computer but finally, I am fine with that good old core i5.
I just have an issue with the hinges and some keys of the right side of the keyboard that stop working sometimes (enter, backspace and a few others). I ordered a new keyboard and 4kg hinges along with a FW12 for my family. I hope that new computer will also last a bit ![]()
