In particular, I installed Xubuntu. Not sure if that’s relevant. There seems to be nothing built-in to use the fingerprint sensor for authentication. I found a website that said to install fprintd and its associated PAM module, which I did. It worked just fine, I could use a fingerprint to authenticate as desired.

But a short time later, my computer froze up, so that the mouse pointer would still move around but otherwise it was totally unresponsive. (Couldn’t click on anything, keyboard didn’t work, top stopped updating, etc.) I could force a restart, but the same thing would happen again after a few minutes. After some general checking for updates, I started to consider whether recently-installed packages were the cause of the problem.

I had also installed python recently, but since I cared more about that than fingerprint authentication, I tried removing fprintd and its PAM module. That done, no more freezing. So it seems to have been the cause of the problem.

So, what’s the correct/safe way to set up the fingerprint sensor on my setup?
