I think Firmware 3.05 is killing my FW16 šŸ˜

About a month ago I installed Firmware 3.05. Simple install. worked.

Since then Iā€™ve noticed the following things have happened:

  • Logitech C920 cameraā€™s hang the computer. If i restart it hangs for ever after it ā€˜signs outā€™ of windows and all is black
  • My laptop keyboard backlight stopped working.

iā€™ve literally just did a full clean Win11 install (including destroying the previous partitions). After install completed, i then ran/installed the FW driver bundle thingy. No probs. Then added a few programs (Visual Studio, etcā€¦). Just a few. I value having MINIMAL APP INSTALLS on my babies.

Still noted that thereā€™s no backlight ā€¦

Now the dreaded ā†’ lets plugin my Logitech C920 camera ā€¦ and ā€¦ boom. HANG. Explorer dies and the machine stops without BSOD.

Ok - maybe itā€™s the physical camera unit? Sure! lets swap it out for another, different camera (same product, thought).

BOOM. same thing.

So firstly, can I roll back to 3.04? Should I?

Is there any way to get any stats/logs to help proove this is happening? Sure, I can take a phone video of this ā€¦ but would that help?

Has my backlit keyboard died? The unit was only shipped to me about 4 months ago.

I donā€™t think the BIOS did a thing here.
The BIOS is just there to actually get the system into a ā€œrestrictedā€ bootable state.
The OS then takes over, with its drivers etc.
Check which updates have been installed over time, and see if you have a match with your camera and laptop.

Using 3.05 here under linux, and smoth goingā€¦ Everything works.

Iā€™ve been installing win10 and win11 since day 1.

iā€™ve been using the same Logitech c920 camā€™s for years.

The only connection I can make is since the 3.05 update.
Iā€™ve even physically swapped out the cam for another unit! and itā€™s still doing the same thing.

Putting aside my ā€˜feelingsā€™, is there any logs/data I can gather to prove my point?

This is also on a fresh win11 install. And iā€™ve been doing installs since then win 3.1 . Yes - that long ā€¦ so iā€™ve had my fair share of windows installs over the last 2 decades, odd.

This is really weird :frowning:

EDIT: Donā€™t forget, my back light is also not working anymore!

maybe i have some weird power/connection problem, in the unit?

Iā€™d check if there are some new or old drivers you could use to test it.
What I would do.

Which version of Win11 are you using? For me 24H2 likewise had a lot of issues once I upgraded (while already having 3.05 BIOS), while 23H2 worked fine pre- and post-upgrade.

This is not strictly correct. BIOS update for Framework includes the BIOS itself, but also USB PD firmware and EC firmware. Both of the latter are active during OS runtime and can affect systemā€™s compatibility with chargers, docks and other USB devices.

Iā€™ve posted about this in other threads, but I had a similar problem and tracked it down to sound devices causing the problem, in my case it was the webcam, but this worked for me: [SOLVED] USB Audio problems with Framework 16

Oh wow! this is interesting! The details in that ā€œUSB Audio Problemsā€ post are EXACTLY what Iā€™m having!!!

I need to give this a try!

Also, interesting about this:

USB PD firmware and EC firmware

I wonder if thereā€™s a bug in the firmware for USB audio vs AMD Audio CoProcessor?

Also, some replies

Which version of Win11 are you using? For me 24H2

Latest. 24H2. New download from MS using USB media creation tool.

Iā€™d check if there are some new or old drivers

The camera has never had any drivers come with it.

WHOA! ok ā€¦

  • disabled ā€œAMD Audio CoProcessorā€
  • plugged in camera
  • system didnā€™t die ā€¦
  • went into Slack and checked camera and audio settings ā€¦ and ā€¦ itā€™s working!

DAMN!

@Framework deverlopers ā†’ please take note that thereā€™s something buggy with the lappy + AMD Audio CoProcessor.

EDIT: My keyboard back light is still not working/no lights. :frowning:

Have you tried rebooting the keyboard? You can do that by opening the side clips and sliding the trackpad out a little (2-3mm or 1/8 inch or so) and then sliding it back in.

Yep. fully removed the keyboard (gotta love those magnets! so awesome).

then slid it back in. replaced the trackpad and the two side panels next to the track pad.

pushed the clips in.

still busted :frowning:

holding fn key and pressing space bar (4 times) doesnā€™t bring up, (step through the levels of), any lighting?
Could you test while running a Live USB of ubuntu 24.04, or other Linux.
Cheers

I donā€™t know about the backlight, but I was experiencing a similar hang/crash when I first upgraded as well, though mine no longer hangs if i boot with only the power cord plugged in, then add USB accessories after I get to Windows login.

No lighting is displayed at all. The power button has a square backlight, but the RGB isnā€™t working at all.

It used to, until about 3 weeks ago.

100% totally. Iā€™ve ā€¦ never done this though. Iā€™ve made a win11 usb bootable.

/me googles quickly ā€¦

I guess I can try these steps to make a bootable, and report back.

@valiantCM Iā€™m assuming that when i boot into Ubuntu 24.04 (from USB) the keyboard will light up?

Iā€™m also assuming that there is NOT a bios setting which iā€™ve turned off.

Me too or, youā€™ll be able to adjust with the fn + space-bar keys.

Me too, I hadnā€™t considered that. I donā€™t know if there is a setting for keyboard lighting off, but there is one to dim the power button backlight.

May start a ticket with Support?
Good luck.

Booted into usb-bootable ubuntu. everything worked lovely - except the backlight :frowning:

i think this is now an official support issue :frowning:

(btw, been ages since iā€™ve booted into linux desktop. was very nice!)
