Random things broken after latest windows update? (24H2 / KB5048667 / KB5048162)

I’m seeing multiple of my framework users report all kinds of broken weirdness after installing the latest windows updates.

Is anyone else seeing this happen on their laptops?

What I know so far:

This is spread across a fw16 and a fw13 AMD, random breakage after updating with things like:

  • system will no longer start booting when usb-c is dock plugged in
    • or sometimes when other random usb devices like a keyboard of logitech bio webcam are plugged directly into the device
  • fingerprint reader randomly not be available on some boots
  • google chrome having many many crashes
  • zoom app just showing a blank box and not loading
    • zoom app working right after boot, but then randomly not working as soon as plugging in a usb device like a webcam
    • zoom app working for like 40 minutes normally, but then randomly having the systems audio devices(speaker and mic) drop off the face of the earth
  • other apps not working normally
  • slow booting
  • slow performance
  • freezing while shutting down
  • general weirdness

I think the windows updates in question are KB5048667 and/or KB5048162.

The fw16 user tried reinstalling the driver bundle a bunch of times so not sure how much of these symptoms are related to that vs the update.

  1. The first time the bundle had some error at driver #2
  2. Rebooted and tried again but ran the bundle with admin privileges but it stalled out on driver #7 and had to kill it and reboot.
  3. 3rd time, again as admin, it apparently installed the whole driver bundle as expected.
  • fw16 user reported things were roughly:
    • 50% more normal after bundle driver installed
    • They then installed a 3rd windows updates(not sure what KB#), this update only showed up as available a few hours into the broken update being installed
      • They reported things were roughly 70% back normal
    • The user is currently convinced the remaining 30% of weirdness is related to their logitech brio webcam and/or it’s software and is messing with that.

The fw13 AMD user installed what I believe to be the same update, no KB#s, just said it was the 24H2 update. They also reported slow booting, slow performance, as well as many apps not working as expected(especially zoom), and just general funkyness.

They reverted with the Go Back option under windows recovery. After reverting the update and going back to 23H2 everything is working as expected.

I’m not sure it’s relevant, but the fw16 user has a logitech brio webcam while the fw13 user has a logitech C922 webcam and they both use this monoprice usb-c dock: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=44465

fw13 bios: 03.05
fw16 bios: 03.03

RAM: both are using 1x stick of crucial 48gb 5600MHz

Also I’ve got a 3rd user(fw16) that the updates already installed to last night but is afraid to reboot now

Try the top link for sure. This issue appears to jack up a ton of stuff on AMD when external devices are connected. Maybe AMD will fix this eventually. That posts has close to a dozen other users with both 13s and 16s where disabling the device in the thread fixed their issues.

It’s not even just framework devices that are affected. My workplace blacklisted the 24H2 update because it breaks too much stuff

I’m neutral on the whole windows release plan in general, but for a major hardware developer they should have worked this out by now. 24H2 was available back in February if developers were wanting to test with it. 10 months later you would think they would have made the adjustments necessary to be compatible, it’s not like AMD is a small outfit. The more legacy stuff I can see being a big fat Microsoft mess up if they didn’t thoroughly test the reverse compatibility there. It doesn’t appear that this issue is happening on Intel devices either.
