Keyboard Cooling Module

I noticed my keyboard/mousepad getting warm under extended load and had the idea: “What if you replaced the keyboard with a ‘Cooling module’?”

I use my FW16 as a desktop replacer, I use external peripherals (keyboard and mouse) and rarely even make use of the keyboard. I imagine many other users similarly rely more heavily on their FW16. my FW16 doesn’t even leave my desk unless special circumstances arise.

For the sake of both convenience and optimization, I believe a keyboard-replacing cooling module would be the best option. A module that slots into the keyboard area, has inlets at both ends with fans (or some other airflow system) to both push and pull air into and out of a thin heat sink channel using a heat pad to increase thermally conductive connection to the aluminum plate encasing the interior of the laptop. This would draw ambient heat away from the main board and, while it may not be as effective as the integrated heat pipes and fans, could greatly contribute to lightening the load off of them and possibly even reduce fan noise during normal use (many hands make light work).

Replacing the keyboard is, ideally, the best option. It’s effortless and convenient to install/remove making it a quick fix if you need to transition from desktop to lap-laptop, and if you bring an external keyboard with you, you could just use it inplace of the integrated keyboard even on the go, as the cooling module acts as a perfect surface to place a keyboard on top of.

Theoretically, this could also just be a passive system, using just a heatsink and thermal pad to passively draw heat upward away from the main board in place of the keyboard, however, I have no idea how effective that would be without air actively being circulated.

I love this idea. Even though I almost never use an external keyboard for my FW16 (it hasn’t completely replaced my desktop yet) it would be awesome to get some additional cooling. I like the idea of swapping between the keyboard and cooling when needed. There are some games that I like to use a controller for so that would be a great way to keep the laptop cooler when playing those games.
