Laptop 13 suddenly no OS or bootable device found

I have used my Framework 13 Ryzen 300 series with Ubuntu 25.10 since October without any issue. Every day. Also yesterday. I shut-down the machine several times per week. Also yesterday after working all day without issues. Upon start-up this morning I receive this “no operating system or bootable device found”

I did connect a WD external hard disk during the weekend to download photos from Google drive to it, but of course removed the drive since the issue appeared.

Actions taken:

  • BIOS: set to defaults values
  • opened up the laptop and removed and reinstalled the 1TB SSD module
  • BIOS: disabled boot from USB (and re-enabled again)

Turning to AI now to figure out what to do next…

Anybody experienced this before?

Also talking to Jaydee from Framework support

Thanks,
Sam

What SSD are you using as it sounds like it might’ve died, you could try formatting it however if it doesn’t show up (try something like Gentoo or arch ISO on a USB and type “lsblk”) then you’d probably need a new one

Have your tried booting into a Live ISO of Ubuntu or other distro? If you can open the disk utility and see if you see your SSD.

Another option is to get an external enclosure for the SSD and see if another computer detects the drive (may or may not be able to read the drive, though).

If it can read the drive do a backup of all your important stuff.

Then you can put it back in the laptop and see if doing a clean install brings it back. Then, if it does, restore your stuff from backup.

Thank you Cat1, Alma and Vikram for your comments.

  • I could only boot from live USB after resetting the motherboard with the switch (see mainboard reset in guides on framework)
  • I was not able to format my boot partition with Ubuntu 25.10 live from USB
  • I was able to format the boot partition with Ubuntu 24.04.03 live from USB
  • The not being able to format my boot partition, suggests a faulty 25.10 disk driver to me.
  • I have copied my /home dir to an external drive and fully reinstalled the system with Ubuntu 24.04 as I lost confidence in 25.10 (had already a lot of setbacks with this version)
  • I am monitoring my harddrive and I have not seen any errors so far <journalctl -f -k | grep -iE " (sda|nvme|disk|error)">.

Thanks,
Sam
