No detectable OS on pre-built framework 13

I received a pre-built Framework 13 (AMD AI 300 series) two weeks ago that has been working fine. Then, this morning it went from suddenly playing netflix to an error message that says “we couldn’t detect an operating system or bootable device.”

The error message links to this page, which just says to contact customer service, but I haven’t heard back: No Boot Device Found (AMD Ryzen™ AI 300 Series)

It came pre-installed with Windows 11 so I have no idea what the issue could be. The only thing I can think of is I had just moved the laptop from one room to another but I was holding it carefully (I read the chassis can bend and cause issues). I opened the laptop and it looks like the SSD is installed correctly from what I can tell. Is it possible something happened after just two weeks? Is there any other way for the OS to just suddenly fail mid-use?

Any support is appreciated. I am not very savvy with any of this which is why I got a pre-built.

A few things to try:

  • With the laptop turned off, try re-seating the drive; it’s possible it’s become dislodged
  • Get into the BIOS using F2 on power-up - it should list the bootable drives somewhere. If you can see the main internal drive, check that it is listed as UEFI
  • A bit more advanced - get a bootable USB, say Ubuntu, so you can peek at the drive
  • The ideal test is to see if you can source/borrow a drive caddy, so you can plug it into another computer and peek at what’s going on

I expect Support will get back to you, but with the Pro 13 rollout happening now, they are going to be under a larger ticket backlog:

In general it’s a good idea not to chase via email, as this can often reset time-since-last-action :weary_cat:

Thank you for your suggestions!

  • I reseated the drive in case it got dislodged and still got the same error
  • When I get into the BIOS it’s empty (not sure if that is the right term but there’s nothing listed there). Not sure if that’s any kind of clue but I added a photo below
  • the bootable USB suggestion is where my knowledge on this subject ends so I’ll try to research it or wait for Support to get back to me.

It’s very good to know chasing via email is no good!! Now I regret following up with that same photo. I use my computer for work so I’m in a bit of a tough spot and wasn’t sure how much to troubleshoot while I wait

Yeah, that does look kinda empty to me - I wonder if you have a drive failure. However it might also be worth mooching around the other menus, in case you can see more clues. I had wondered in your case whether the drive contents just became corrupted, and it merely needs Windows installing on it again.

Another idea, since you’re pressed for time, is to find a friendly local computer repair shop. They will have an NVMe caddy that they can put your drive into - it basically temporarily treats your disk as a USB external drive. They also should have a spare drive knocking about that they can use to test your motherboard’s bootability.

Do rack your brains also to see if you’ve any friends or colleagues who might have this kit. Also, does your work have an IT Department? They might be willing to help you troubleshoot as well.

When you go into “Setup Utility” and there under the Boot tab on the left then on the right at the very bottom, does the SSD show up in the device list?

If it does, it has for some reason lost at least the boot entry and you’d need to make a bootable USB drive with the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft or Rufus on another computer, then plug the USB drive into the framework, boot it and see if Windows Recovery can fix the missing boot entry.

If it doesn’t show up there in the list either, then your SSD might have died for some reason.
