Laptop 16, AMD 7040 Series, delivered March 2025. Linux.
Some months in, both rear expansion slots on mine, 1 and 4, went dead in one plug orientation each — no data, no charging, every time, with or without an expansion card fitted. In the orientation that still works, data is fine and charging depends on the source: a 140 W battery power bank charges either slot at its full 28 V, Framework’s own 180 W and 240 W adapters charge neither, and slot 2 takes the full 240 W from the same adapter and cable.
Support took it through troubleshooting in July, wrote that it’s “a mainboard-related issue”, and declined it as out of warranty. So I measured the CC pins myself, laptop shut down, at the plug through a USB-C expansion card and a plug breakout, the same breakout on every slot. One CC pin on each rear slot is shorted to ground — 0.9–2.6 Ω on the ohms range against 0.4–0.5 Ω with the probes on a known short, ~0 both ways on a diode test — CC2 on slot 1, CC1 on slot 4, a mirror image. The other pin on each, and both pins on slots 2 and 5, read open on ohms and about 1.3 V on the diode range with the red probe on ground, which is what a good pin reads here.
The one similar Laptop 16 report I’ve found is this one — slot 1, charging in one orientation only, last November. Has anyone else seen this on slots 1 or 4?
