Laser Engraving Top Cover Viability

Hi folks,

I wanted to see if anyone had ever laser engraved their framework 13 top cover.

For reference I’ve access to a Glowforge Pro that has a 45 watt laser and a RetinaEngrave PS24 90 watt laser. As far as I’m aware (How Many Watts Does a Laser Need to Engrave Metal?) 30 watts is enough so I imagine the 6063 Aluminum of the CNC top cover should be good enough right?

Would love to discuss more, thanks!

  • X Tools F2 Laser cutter
  • 60% Power
  • 1500mm/s
  • 180 lines per cm

Oh that’s so cool. Thanks for experimenting with your FW16 for it.

I’ll be doing a test on aluminum 6063 for the top cover later this month and I’ll update!

The glowforge is a CO2 laser, and aluminum is somewhere around 99% reflective. so direct engraving will not work very well. But using ceremark will make it quite black and beautiful. We have a laser engraving business. I’ve used our fiber laser to engrave laptops, they engrave white on aluminum. Here is the bottom of one
