Micro sd expansion card that is spring loaded

basic recommendation to use those spring loaded microsd slot things for the expansion card so it can seat flush, and be easily removed by pressing it. sorry this is short, just something I really hope is implemented in the near future.

AFAIK the sd card expansion slot is not spring loaded, because it gives it higher durability. I dont have a source for it, though. Just something I read.

I have an idea for an expansion card: SD card launcher…

Idk where to put this, but the sd card module could use that action where you can push on the sd card and it would pop out, making easier removal. If it’s not possible than it’s fine.

This really needed to be spring loaded (actually, I think the cards themselves needed to be but I bet the Framework 13 style case is locked in for a decade now)

I have a lot of difficulty taking the MicroSD cards out and it is never clear when they are inserted correctly.

I would say a full size SDXC reader with a good quality UHS-II adapter card would work better.

They are working on one. But it requires them having a custom SD slot made.

Interestingly, the slots were originally going to have springs, but this was determined to not be the best option for the user experience. See more here

That is interesting. Especially considering every other microUSB drive I’ve ever used was spring loaded. It never occured to me that Frameworks wouldn’t be

The expansion cards themselves were originally spring-loaded, which had the unintended effect of launching them out of the laptop.

Some may see that as a feature though.

Correct, I should note that I was talking about the expansion cards themselves originally being spring loaded. We don’t know about the pre-production of the MicroSD expansion card, but non spring loaded slots do exist on many computers other than the Framework Laptop.

While there could always be a MicroSD expansion v2 that adds a spring loaded mechanism, it does not seem to be a priority for the team right now, as they are currently working on a full-size SD expansion card.

I love my Framework 13 but have a MicroSD card plugged in all the time and it sticking out drives me a bit insane. Not sure if it is in the cards or not but would love a V2 of the reader expansion card that is spring-loaded so that it is flush with the case.

Welcome to the forum.
There is the new full size SD expansion card. You could try that plus a short microSD to SD adapter. Example: ebay.com/itm/175975158720

Does the full size SD card not stick out of the adapter? I assumed it was the same.

It does. That’s the reason you’d buy a short microSD to SD adapter.

Yes, that’s the idea. I believe those half size SD adapters were originally made for macbooks, which also stupidly had the cards stick out. The half size SD adapters work nicely for Raspberry Pis as well. Green Shortening microSD adapter for Raspberry Pi & Macbooks : ID 1693 : Adafruit Industries, Unique & fun DIY electronics and kits

But Storage Expansion Card looks better in your use case: Framework | Storage Expansion Card (2nd Gen) ?

Outside FwkLaptop it will be just odd usb pendrive.

The one thing that I find disappointing with my new Framework 13 is the microSD expansion card. I have an extremely difficult time getting the card out of the slot because it’s the type of slot where there is no spring to eject the card. This is literally the one thing that I miss from my old XPS 13. I’ve got a soldering station and probably more confidence than I should. Would it be possible to swap the slot types? I have googled around and I have found nothing. But I also have no idea what the technical terms are for the parts I’m looking for.

I guess maybe another option is to find a usb-c type external port and try to mod that into a card?

Welcome to the forum.

Those push-to-eject slots are commonly known as “push push”. microSD Memory Card Connectors – Mouser You’ll see in the item description “push push” or “P-P type”, one company using “Auto Eject Out”. You can also find them on aliexpress by searching “push push micro SD” aliexpress.com/w/wholesale-push-push-micro-sd.html or ebay.

You’ll have to find one with a similar enough pin pad layout to at least fit the communication pads on the circuit board. Mounting pads would be less important, since if they don’t line up, you could instead use glue.

I’d be interested in this too. The micro-SD expansion card is a poor design. I usually have to lift the laptop up off the desk so that I can get my fingernails around the card the get it out. A push-push slot would have been the obvious choice here and I would be very interested to know why it wasn’t done that way.

Thanks folks for enlightening me to “push-push” that helps immensely.

Any chance framework publishes schematics for the expansion cards? Or is that 3d model for a card shell and that reference board kicad all we get?
