My display died suddenly!

Hello! My Framework Laptop 13 AMD 7040, with Ubuntu and dual boot Windows 11 has been working flawlessly, but today when I returned from university the display was completely broken when I turned it on. Also after working with it for about 20 minutes the display lost all of its brightness. It had no damage beforehand and neither it suffered no hits nor it was left with hot temperature or something similar, so I have no clue what it might be :frowning: . I’ve contacted framework support but in the meantime I wanted to ask here if anyone had some idea what it could be.

Seen similar issues before on the forum. Typically there has been stress that has caused part of the display to fail. In this case, the stress would be in line with the black band. It was mentioned that no hits or left hot today; though that does not preclude a stress event previously and today it finally gave out. Most (not all) of the damage posted to the forum was user error.

If the laptop is under warranty still Framework will want lots of pictures to try and rule out external damage vs. factory defect.

Fortunately, the display is easily replaced on Framework laptops and relatively inexpensive too. If this laptop did not have the newest display; this could be a chance to update it to the 2.8K model.

The Matte Display is currently $159 USD and the 2.8K Display is $269.

Sorry to see the Framework laptop is damaged. Let us know how it turns out.

Is your cable damaged? On the left?

I dont really know, I moved it and tried to place better following a guide to see if it would make a difference but it did not.

Im in contact with support and I sent some photos alredy ^^.

About the damage, I was using it at uni and then I put it on my backpack (I have like a protection neoprene cover and then inside the backpack) and when I took it out at home it was like that so the laptop stayed closed all the time and it did not get hit and stuff thats why I am confused about it.

I know they are inexpensive but still 150+€, it is not a negligible amount to pay :frowning:

Could still have something pressed against it from the outside. The aluminum is relatively soft and can possibly bend more than the circuitry/assembly of the display can withstand. Maybe you’ve leaned with your backpack on against a metal pole or something like that.

I always carry it inside a neoprene sleeve and it was not pressed against anything

Sorry to hear about the damaged screen. 150+€ is still a decent amount and especially when one is in college where there is not a lot of extra money to be had. The screens are amazing for what they are. Though they are so thin and light; it is somewhat surprising that they hold up as well as they do.

Years ago I did some work for a client on an iMac with a 27" screen that was embedded into the case. The work involved removing the screen to get at everything inside to upgrade the poor innards (back when you could do such a thing on a Mac). Despite being extra careful and double and triple checking nothing was being stressed, when I put it back together and turned it on guess what it looked like? Exactly like your picture; big black band down the middle.

That was a very expensive mistake and I did not charge for any of the work I did. My stomach just sank when I saw that and had to tell the client the bad news.

That sounds like a really challenging task, and even though things didn’t go as planned, you handled it with great professionalism!

And you’re absolutely right, they’re impressive for what they are. When I got a quote to repair my old iPhone screen a few years ago, the cost was almost the same as getting a high-quality display from FW.

University has definitely been draining my savings lately, but ever since the 2.8K display was announced, it’s been on my wishlist for the future. It just seems like a great upgrade path.

On the bright side, Framework Support already got back to me and offered to send a display kit, so I’ll be sending mine back. Fingers crossed that this solves the issue!

Good to hear they are sending a replacement display kit!

Amazing the cost to replace cell phone screens is sometimes more money than the phone is worth! I have had a display crack and the repair was more than I could buy a used phone with better specs with less battery wear.

Let us know how it turns out!
