My Framework 13 - AMD 7040 Series doesn't boot when it is connected to HP Thunderbolt Dock G4

As the topic states my Framework 13 - AMD 7040 Series doesn’t boot when it is connected to a HP Thunderbolt Dock G4.

Observation:

  • The light on the power switch is on
  • I use the upper left port (Port 1) with an USB Type C expansion card
  • The little power indicator light is on
  • The screen stays black
  • When booting disconnected and connecting it, when windows is up, it works

Laptop:

  • Framework 13 - AMD Ryzen 7 7840U w/ Radeon 780M Graphics
  • 64 GB RAM
  • BIOS-Version: INSYDE Corp. 03.18, 08.01.2026
  • Driver-Bundle: v2.07 (2025-11-20)

Docking-Station:

  • HP Thunderbolt Dock G4 (120W)
  • Firmware: 1.5.29.0 Rev.A (20.11.2025) - this is the current version

I tried to disable booting from USB-Devices - a quick search online suggests that this might help - but it didn’t.

Does anybody have other suggestions? How can I investigate the problem further?

It’s a known bug in BIOS 3.18, but still no fix available. Downgrade to 3.17 and your laptop will boot again.

Thanks Mathias .. i try to downgrade and test again, when the next bios is published.

@Mathias Hi,
BIOS 3.20 released some days ago. Do you know if this release fixes the problem? I dont know how to find this information by myself. The release notes say nothing about “Embedded Controller Firmware”.

I didnt try the new BIOS yet. I’d like to avoid the update if I already know that the problem hasn’t been resolved anyway.

3.20 also fixes the issue. 3.19 beta already fixed it, but had other issues, so 3.20 is some kind of fixed 3.19 :wink:

Its a common thing - after fix is before the fix :wink:

I’ll try the BIOS at weekend.
