Hi All, I have a weird issue with my Framework and wondered if anyone here had any ideas…
Often when I start the computer (maybe one in five times) the laptop blinks codes, but it does not do this for a period of time (enough to POST, load an OS and log in). The codes it blinks appear to say that there was an issue initiating the display, however given I’m typing this using the laptop, the display works flawlessly, so I’m a bit confused about why the laptop keeps blinking codes? This is the new 2.8k display. No other issues with the laptop at all.
OS: Any (I dual boot Fedora and Windows)
Version: F40 W11
Laptop: Laptop 13 AMD R5
Display: 2.8k display
BIOS, drivers and software fully up to date
I have the same issue with the 2.8k display as well. Where did you find the POST code documentation? All I found was the Intel 11th gen documentation on POST codes and I’m not sure if they’re the same.
I just used the one from the 11th gen guide. It really should in my mind be more transparent, but given the codes are output by the BIOS, I can’t have imagined Framework would have changed the post codes since the 11th gen.
My running theory is whatever is used to confirm the display is initialised properly isn’t passed back to the BIOS correctly by the display and it probably just requires Framework to do a BIOS update, but I still can’t get rid of the nag in the back of my mind which makes me think that there could be a problem somewhere, or one to come, as surely Framework themselves would have noticed this and either said something or fixed it.
My AMD Frameworks Laptop have done this since Day 1. I think the embedded controller (which is in charge of the side LEDs) just blinks out the diagnostic codes regardless of the firmware state[1].
where the 11th, 12th and 13th Generation Intel ones do so only if the “pre-OS” flag is not cleared for 10-30 seconds. ↩︎
That’s interesting, but in that case surely I should get all green LED’s at the start so everything passes as working? I definitely get one red error one, which on the 11th gen guide would be failed display initialisation.
I think the EC is coded to display the LED codes upon initialization (i.e. when the EC is reset). Similar to a POST screen always showing up each cycle.
Others have said the 2.8K is giving an error code in the LED codes even though it is working as intended. This will probably be addressed sometime later in a firmware update.
My standalone 11th Gen board always shows the codes when it is power cycled. The FW 16 only does it after it has been shutdown for an extended period of time.
