New Framework 13 Laptop screen issues

Hi everyone,

I just bought a framework 13 with the amd 370 chip in it and it came in today! Very exciting!!!

However…

I booted it up and noticed a large streak down the screen and I can’t find a way to get rid of it. I’ve filed a ticket, but I’m impatient lol.

Here’s what I’ve noticed:

  • It happens in the BIOS screen along with grub and inside Fedora.
  • it’s a ~3” in width from top to bottom strip that is darker than the rest of the screen
  • the screen has a bit of static at times

Here’s things I’ve tried:

  • Linux updates
  • Firmware updates (including BIOS)
  • reseating display cable at both ends
  • reseating ram
  • used only one ram stick (tried both)

Nothing has changed. I’m wondering if there are any other troubleshooting tips you guys have or am I just destined to wait a few days for a replacement screen?

I’m fairly certain it’s the screen itself. I took the screen out and while the laptop was on, I pushed on the base of it and it changed the flicker a bit.
Still open to ideas, but now I’m just waiting on Framework support to reach out to my ticket. Hopefully they don’t take too long.

Could well be you need a replacement screen.

Shut down the laptop. Open it up and see if you can - carefully - unplug and plug back in the cable connecting the screen to the motherboard.

If you follow the screen replacement guide for your laptop it should guide you to the steps to being able to disconnect and reconnect the screen.

Remember to disconnect the cable connecting the battery as well.

Thanks for the idea! I’ve tried this on both ends, to the screen and to the motherboard. And unfortunately, no change.

You have done all the things I would have tried to narrow down the issue. It appears that the screen was defective on arrival which happens (although much less common these days). It is still working mostly which means the laptop is still usable. Keep working with support and they will get it worked out.

So thankful this is a Framework laptop and a screen replacement is so much easier compared to almost ever other laptop being made today. Enjoy your new machine! Let us know how it turns out. :grinning:

I’m working with support, so far i’ve sent them photos and such. I’m also having wifi issues, but they’re helping me with those too. Just keeps randomly disconnecting from the wifi for some reason.

I’m very thankful the screen can be replaced so easily! Thanks to the wonderful design of the framework people!
