- Windows 10
- Laptop 16, AMD 7840 w/ Radeon 780M Graphics (sometimes swap out for RX 7700x for rendering or gaming but i usually have the expansion bay shell in because of the louder fans. I primarily use my laptop for music production)
this problem seems to be identical or very similar to this forum post: Framework 16 goes haywire; zooms in, presses random keys perpetually , Hopefully I can provide some more details on it if other people are experiencing the same thing.
About a week ago I started experiencing some difficult-to-explain phantom keyboard inputs. It started for seemingly no reason; I haven’t installed any new software recently, and to my knowledge havent had any software updates that would align with the timing (unless something installed in the bg without me knowing? idk).
Before I go in on the details I’ll note that I narrowed it down to being some issue with the laptop keyboard, so I’ve ordered a new one (us english, 2nd gen) and expect the problem to be fixed. ill update if it isn’t.
When i power up, about half the time when i try to type in my password it will spam the tab key at random intervals, usually only when I’m currently typing, making it very difficult to actually enter my password since it’ll repeatedly de-focus the text box. I can get around the issue if I plug in an external keyboard and type the password. Also when I power it up, it’ll sometimes activate the windows magnifier and zoom way in, which doesnt change if I plug in an external keyboard. these two behaviors only happen on the login screen, which I find to be odd.
When not on the login screen, there’s no issues for most of the time. But it’ll randomly sometimes decide to flare up and go crazy. The windows key will be repeatedly held down and released, it’ll repeatedly open up the “how to get help in windows” thing from pressing win+f1, flash the task view (win+tab), and somehow select icons in my taskbar presumably with tab navigation. actual non-modifier keys haven’t been having any issues (aside from the `=` key on the login screen to activate the magnifier).
Sometimes it flares up only when I’m typing, sometimes it’ll do so passively. I haven’t really found any defined relationships between the keypresses and any apps I have running. I do have windhawk installed with a few modifications that effect keyboard shortcuts, but i doubt that’s whats causing the issues.
There’s no relationship between the occurrence of these issues and the state of any of my other peripherals.
I have managed to stop these things from happening by manually disconnecting the keyboard in device manager, but things resume once the keyboard is re-connected (when i restart the laptop or plug in any new peripherals causing the keyboard to also be re-connected).
Most recently, I was unfortunately letting my emotions regarding the issue cloud my judgement and I tried to take the windows keycap off of the keyboard so i could blast it with compressed air. In doing this I used too much force and broke the little connector thingy, and the keycap won’t go back on. This is annoying and entirely my fault, but also funnily enough not having the windows key attached for the time being has totally halted any issues. I’m writing this post about 30 minutes after breaking the key off, which is absolutely not enough time to make any conclusions, though.
This is a video I took of the issue happening: https://youtu.be/Ejlwz5hbqe0. I also captured my retrospectively idiotic attempt at removing the keycap in the last minute of this video.
Me breaking the key also was what pushed me to just go ahead and just order a new keyboard instead of trying to contact support and get a replacement (which I’ve thankfully been able to do in the past with an unrelated hardware issue. Framework support is incredible!). There may have been a better solution that didn’t require me to spend money, but I’m not too bothered because I also spilled something sticky on the keyboard a couple weeks ago and some of the keys in the top-middle of the keyboard are slightly sticky and I was thinking of replacing the keyboard anyways.
have a good day ![]()
