I have a Lenovo Ideapad Flex something and it looks like it has the same hinge mechanism as the FW 12, down to the hinge cover and all, from the last I have seen from it. The problem is my hinges on the Lenovo were only screwed into thin plastic on the display and on the back cover so after moderate use over 2-3 years they completely broke off and a replacement would be pretty pricy because the mounting is integrated into the display. So my question is if this failure point has a proper solution in the design of the FW12 because I really want to get one as a replacment.
If you wish to see pictures of how the hinges are attached, you can wait until the Framework Laptop 12 repair guides are posted. All Frameworks have full step-by-step guides on replacing each part. This isn’t a Lenovo, so no reason to believe the design has the same weakness. Many 2-in-1s use the same basic hinge setup, but the connection to the frame can be done different.
At the very least, this is definitely different on the FW 12. The display itself can be quickly and easily removed from the top case. So even if the hinges screw into plastic (there is supposedly a metal, inner structure, so probably not), the plastic top case could be replaced without replacing the display, so it shouldn’t be terribly expensive.
Also, welcome to the community!
They did say plastic shell with metal skeleton so I would hope they’d screw the hinges into the skeleton but we’ll see.
