Possible to charge a Framework battery externally?

Hi all,
I have a 12th gen intel framework 13 motherboard with a peculiar defect. The board will take no power input. It did, however, boot fine from the battery, but did not charge the battery no matter which port I connected the power supply to. So eventually the battery drained and the laptop died. Everything else worked fine as long as it still had a charge.

I eventually got a new motherboard and forgot about the defect one at the bottom of my drawer, continued to use the laptop for a few years, then sold it because I switched back to a desktop pc.

I just found the defective board again and considered turning it into a maker project. The idea is to buy a battery, and somehow McGyver an external USB-C-PD charging controller to it. Has anyone tried something like this before?
