Prices for Framework 12

Ordered one anyway (DIY)

I get not releasing prices and preorders for the US until being able to figure out how the tariffs will affect things, but we can’t even see the system specs yet? :man_facepalming:

Edit: Never mind, it’s been updated now.

Definitely a bit steeper than I was hoping for. But I guess it is what it is. I wonder if the US pricing will ultimately be high enough that I end up not ordering one after all.

DIY without any SSD or RAM.

Pre-Built only available in black and at € 849 (i3 8GB RAM + 512GB SSD) & € 1.049 (i5, 16GB RAM, 512 GB SSD)

Can’t you change the country in the top right corner of the website temporarily? Or use a VPN?

I was able to see them. They aren’t quite as detailed as I would hope just yet, but most of them are there.

Weird, the specs page is completely blank for me.

Edit: Never mind, it’s been updated now.

They released something on that. For the time being they’ll pass 10% of the tariff to consumers and absorb the rest.

I probably could. Good point. I’ll stop making others do the research for me, lol.

I wish the keyboard was backlit. I have a non-backlit tablet and it’s a bit of a pain when using on the couch while watching tv.

I still ordered one but I hope it will be moddable or something.

This pricing makes little sense to me. If they want to break into the education sector nearly 1000 dollar machines is not the way to go.

No worries - all good.

Hope I did not come off too strong. Was genuinely trying to suggest workarounds - and interested if changing country using their built-in selector would work.

In all honesty the entry level market for enthusiasts tends to be used midrange stuff from a few years ago. I was not expecting the 12 to be all that cheap even with all the cut corners.

That was the main concern for me as well. Hope there will be a back-lit replacement option in the future.

Second disappointment is weight. 1.3kg at that form factor sadly is not cutting it for my main use case as travel companion.

On the fence RN - will most likely wait for keyboard and join later batches if at all.

Edit: Just preordered

Not at all. Cheers!

Nonetheless, it’s rather disappointing how much corners they’ve cut here for so little cost savings. I could still afford the i3 variant (it does certainly have enough performance for me), but I’d just feel ashamed using an i3 as a “tech enthusiast”.

That is the same weight they quote for the FW 13. I was hoping for a bit lighter machine as well. Weight isn’t the main consideration for me, so it wouldn’t make or break a purchase decision, but not even 0.1 or 0.2kg less than the 13? Bummer. But I guess it sort of makes sense. Plastic is only lighter with a similar thickness. If it has to be as strong as the aluminum frame, it’s probably thicker, plus it has a “metal” structure, which I took to mean steel (cheaper). So I suppose it makes sense that it’s no lighter.

That is kind of why the corner cutting seemed to weird to me, it’s not going to be cheap enough anyway. Might as well put in 2 memory channels (or sodimm + soldered), usb4 and a backlit keyboard and have it be somewhat premium for like 1-200 bucks more.

I am not particularly disappointed, I actually kinda expected it to be more expensive but also not leave out keyboard backlight or usb4.

If I was getting one I’d get the i3, the i3s tend to be some of intels most competitive parts these days. all the i5 would get me is 2 more cheese cores and a few more igpu compute units that can get starved by the missing memory bandwidth.

If I was you I’d take that money and grab something interesting off the used market.

Plastic is not the way to go if you want light and it not being floppy, plastic is light but strength to weight wise aluminum has it beat.

would be kind of surprised if it was steel but we’ll see.

I guess I was picturing some kind of stamped steel rails as the “structure,” but some type of aluminum base that screwed into the plastic chassis that everything else then screwed to would probably make as much, or more sense. As you say, we’ll see.

@sudothelinuxwizard So you DO understand how CHEAP, compared to the rest of the world, electronics is in the US, and yet you practically advocate subsidizing them because the president THEY voted into the office has introduced tariffs, probably with the intent to drive down stock prices of the companies he (or even more likely, his sponsors) want(s) to take over, before he cancels the tariffs again and throws the secretary of commerce (or how they call him) to the sharks. Srsly?

Ad cooling: Dell Precisions with 10~13th gen Intel CPU’s of ALL lines have serious problems with cooling in i7 and i9 configs. The problem, however, is, that these problems are there not only when the CPU is at the 45W TDP and full performance profile, but also when they are dialed down (read throttled) all the way to 35W and on the conservative profile. The CPU’s are still over 75°C.
BTW the i5-1334U in the FW12 is 6~10% more powerful than the i7-10850H with 1/3 TDP and less threads:
https://technical.city/en/cpu/Core-i7-10850H-vs-Core-i5-1334U
Just for you to get the idea how terrible 10~13gen Intel i7’s and i9’s are.
Maybe you live in a country where Dell ships computers with CPU’s from not-completely-crap bins.

Cutting corners? Again, are you even serious? Acer Iconia W700 with i3-2365M and 11,6" FHD display in an aluminium chassis, which was a pure tablet = no clamshell, just the display with an embedded computer and no keyboard, weighted 900g. Dell Chromebook 3100 2in1 with a PLASTIC chassis and 11,6" HDready (1366*768) display weights 1,1kg!
I’m seriously starting to doubt you have even an approximate idea what you are talking about.

Ad AMD from 2023 beating i7 from 2015: Are you even paying attention to the text? The FW16 replaced the i7-6700, but as I repeatedly wrote, 10~13th gen Intels are crap, and especially 10850.
To make it even clearer, 10 != 6. Even worse, 6th gen is much BETTER than the 10th.

Secret is to order it as company expense and get a VAT discount
