PSA: Keyboard marks on the screen are removable with water

Since almost day one my FL16 started showing a lot of marks on the screen from the keyboard. I guess, the top lid is flexible enough that the screen ends up touching the keyboard when the laptop’s in the backpack.

All my prior laptops with bare LCDs also had the same behavior and I always thought they were permanent scratches in the LCD’s surface. (And on some laptops they definitely were).

I don’t want to put cloth between my screen and keyboard cause I’ll have to find a place for it every time I open the laptop, and I’m not going to look into changing my backpack or how I pack it so that the screen doesn’t get bent, so I figured I’d just change the screen after a couple of years when it’ll look bad.

So, today I had to clean some unrelated residue from the screen and I used a microfiber cloth slightly damp with water, and the marks (which were plentiful) are totally gone! The screen is good as new!

Want to let everyone else know in case you were also just accepting the marks!

Not sure if important detail - my keyboard is the clear variant.

Hey, I thought I’d follow up on your post with my experience trying this.
I have the standard black US English layout on my Framework 13 laptop, and this solution didn’t fix the marks on my screen. :frowning:
I hope this helps someone else other than me.

I use the vinegar-based Windex to clean laptop displays. Spray a small amount on a microfiber towel and wipe the display. So far it has never damaged any brand of laptop’s display.

Obviously, take care not to let any of the Windex drip onto the laptop–it might drip from the spray bottle as you are spraying onto the towel.

Also, to protect the screen when the laptop is closed, you can use Tyvek. It’s thinner than most cloths and is what some DVD and CD sleeves are made from.

I’ll have to try this, it sounds promising. Will report back later.
