Request for help: DIY external monitor from spare parts

Framework’s upgraded top lid and 13" screen introduce an opportunity for those that upgrade to turn the old shell and screen into an external monitor. I got myself a board that handles the conversion between usb-c and eDP, now I just need a housing.

Since I have this spare top shell, my thinking is that this could be two layers: the first to raise the screen away from the shell for placement of controlling electronics, and a second layer to act as bezel. The bezel could be fit with magnets, allowing the external enclosure to be packed directly on top of the laptop and snap to the existing magnet system.

I’m happy to do this myself, but 3D modeling is a lot to learn and my time is limited. If someone would be willing to pair up, I’d be happy to discuss compensation, as long as the product is released to the community as open source.

I have a work-in-progress external monitor project from framework spare parts.

I posted some photos on the Framework discord channel:

Usually, the black bezel is on my FW13. But because I printed the feet in Black, I switched the bezels for the photo.

It’s not quite ready yet, but I really love where this is going

Would that work for you?
